I just picked up the March issue of Classic Toy Trains. I know not the OGR but wanted something to read while on break at work. While on break at work I saw one article that caught my eye. The article was on building a Marx box-motor traction unit. Using a motor and a wagon style tender. My question is what would be the best Marx two-wheel non-reversing motor assembly to use to make a similar electric locomotive?

2 wheel??? Dunno that Marx ever had one. 4 wheel, I'd say the 490 motor.

I looked over the article again it looks like the 490 motor
There were some 2 wheel Marx motors. They were used in some cheaper versions of the FM styled tin diesel and some of the M10005 power cars. Had tiny wheels instead of the usual big spoked steamer drivers. A non-powered axle supported the other end of the 2 wheel drive locos.
I'd stick with at least a 490 motor if you want to pull much with your box motor.
If you want non-reversing you can simply bypass the E-unit of any motor. I like manual reverse switches for some of my locos.
Hmmmm....haven't paid much attention to those 2 driver motored Marx, and didn't realize their configuration...will have to check junkboxes in shows for ones with rusty or beat up bodies, to see if they can be kitbashed into something...
Question for Ace. How do you reconfigure the wires from the marx reversing unit to make it one directional.
