Surprisingly, the truck-to-body size relation, and overall proportions, of the Marx 3/16" cars is quite pleasing. To my eyes, a train of the 3/16" tinplate cars make a better looking train proportionally, than does a train of Lionel 027 cars. BUT, that's just me.

I like both: Marx 3/16" and Lionel 027.

Marx 3/16 cars and locomotives are actually S scale models - that's what 3/16" means. That's why they look better than 027 and even some larger O-gauge pieces. They and their original trucks are scale models, done in steel (plated with tin) and decorated, quite accurately, using lithography. I find that mix of mediums very appealing. Who but Marx had that much imagination? Many a Marx 3/16 car was re-trucked to S gauge and wound up on American Flyer S-scale layouts. Maybe a few of their 3/16" steamer boiler shells got mounted on AF running gear, too.

Later these 3/16 bodies sometimes had the more traditional Marx 027 trucks mounted by Marx, rather than the shorter, scale-detailed 3/16 trucks.

K-Line had a Marx 333 body mounted on S scale running gear in a later catalog. Too bad they never produced it.

There are a bunch of Marx 3/16" cars converted to S gauge on my pike, especially the pacific fruit express reefers.
