I have a little Marx 999 that I can't seem to get to run smoothly.  It seems to "drag" when you start it up, and requires a bump in power to get it moving.  This behavior is sporadic.  In addition, it will sometimes get "stuck" when I try to reverse direction, and will just buzz, but can't get going.  Kinda like the E unit is malfunctioning.  Also, I notice that the headlight bulb will suddenly get VERY bright, and within a few minutes it burns out.   Any ideas?

Thanks,  YJ

Sounds like a good cleaning and lube job are in order.

I just picked up my third 999 last weekend. It's a smooth runner now, but Sunday afternoon it wasn't. It barely moved at all. 90 percent rubbing alcohol is a good cleaner. I use Q-Tips to scrub with. Also Radio Shack electronic contact and tuner cleaner spray works wonders on old sticky E-units. Radio Shack also carries bulbs that will work in Marx locos.

LaBelle 106 grease on gears and a good oil on wheel and axle bearings does wonders too.
