Okay, now for a technical question.

Are the Marx S3-ish switchers prone to overheating? I bought one that "needs repair" for the purpose of studying the motor (at the time I was still waxing 2-rail), but I was unprepared for this. The forward part of the hood shows a lot of warping.

Is the reversing unit (or light) prone to that much heating? This is fairly thick plastic, and while I understand that plastic sometimes does warp, this looks more like heat (though there are no signs of scorching on the inside).

Thanks for the offer, let me mull it over. This Marx unit really is a project, though, and when I mean project what I mean to say is... it needs a whole lot of work, let me just say that. My original plan (don't laugh) was to convert it to semi-scale DC 2-rail, but since I have submitted to the siren song of 3-rail, I'm beginning to suspect that simply replacing the unit is in the offing. Still, I love the things heft. Gotta get one of these things running.
