Hello. I'm not knowledgeable about Marx train value so I'm posting this question here. An individual has this set along with track and they'd like to know the value. Could give a guesstimate?
Thanks,
Steve

I'm no expert but I'd say $30-$40.
Looks like a prewar set with 8 wheel cars and the one-way couplers. I've seen cars like that go around $20 to $30 each. Not sure about the whole set. Looks like it was one of the higher end sets.
Marx was one of the lower end brands, I've seen full prewar Marx trainsets going for as low as $15.
That being said, they may not be the prettiest or quietest things but I doubt you'll ever have a problem with it breaking on you if you plan on keeping it (If it don't make sparks it probably ain't a Marx) . I find they make good gifts for aspiring model railroaders, my friend just bought a whole box of Marx trains and a few scouts for $20. We're going to use them to build trainsets for kids and give them away.
not a bad looking set, like to have one myself.
It has been decades since I have seen a set like that go for $15.00, that is , a prewar
one way coupler set. It might go for $50-$100. $15.00 is more than I will pay for dummy knuckle plastic sets powered by the #400 or #490. A higher end set might be the Ward's Switch Train set and go for over $200, but that ain't it.
I've never seen a Marx tinplate set go for over $50.
I actually bought one before Christmas to give to a relative's kids, track, controller, box & accessories cost me $8. There's a guy at the local train swapmeet that will sell you the full trains for about $25. Might just depend on where you're from too, but Marx is cheap and plentiful out here.
PS. If they are that expensive elsewhere I'd be glad to sell anybody some of our Marx stuff for dirt cheap, I've been just giving the stuff away.
very generous Brian, if you have a CP loco (with/without set) like the OP's, I'd be interested.
I actually just got 1 and it runs better than any Marx I've ever seen, no grinding, minimal sparking. If you want you can have it for $10+shipping. It's missing the tender though.
EDIT: here's a pic and I'll throw in the wheel-less tender from my scrap box for free, it seems to fit.

The value is personal enjoyment. In other words the market value is that you will need to pay someone to take them away! I tell you, its next to impossible to give this stuff away. The market is swimming in old trains right now and the audience is declining.

I'll take it! Let me know how you want to be paid.
well if Jack doesn't get it, I will.
The cars shown by the original poster are 1938-42 with the one way automatic coupler. Being as they have steel male posts instead of cast one, that makes them from the end of those years. They are all pretty common and the cars and tender should sell for $10-30.00. The loco is a bit rougher so maybe $20-40.00. Track, switches and transformer have little value, other than to fill out a boxed set. Some of the harder to find cars from that series can command quite a bit more.

Steamer you did ask first, so I'll give it to you (Sorry Jack)
Also sorry for "de-railing" this thread haha! (I feel bad for that joke.)
There definitely is cheap Marx, as I mentioned above, but it all is certainly not cheap
or give away, if you've followed the Bay or attended shows, such as York. Army
trains, the Bunny train, deluxe plastic sets such as those with the Rock Island
switchers, and...quite a few others seem to sell for too much.
thanks Brian! my email is in my profile (I didn't see one for you), let me know when where and how you want it!
I can't seem to find your e-mail steamer, and there doesn't seem to be a private message function on this forum.
PS. I have 3 metals Marx 666's, I'm willing to sell one (or maybe two) of those too if anybody wants it. I should probably start my own thread...
There's the "cheap" MARX and then there is the better quality prewar pieces. Quite a few of the prewar steam w/tender can easily run, $130.+ in C-6 and that's just the locomotive w/tender. It's not uncommon for a, C-8 unit to go for, $170. I've seen some quality MARX engine/tender sets, $235.+. I'll go back to my corner now.
I've seen some sets command over a thousand. The most I've paid is 600.

sorry Brian..it's there now
I saw one of the Civil War train/play set combinations go for over a grand in an obscure, small town auction. I dropped out long before that. I can't think of any
that I'd pay that for, but I am not interested in the Bunny train.
If the engine runs my guess that what you have pictured is worth around $ 50 to $ 60. Even though Marx was the lower price maker of trains their engines usually were pretty bullet proof. Chances are if it doesn't run it wouldn't take much to make it run.
got the engine and the extras Brian. A BIG thanks!
