Hi everyone, trainfam here. I’ve got a question about Marx trains. Did Marx ever make any electric train’s with two couplers, I.e. one coupler on the front and one on the back. The reason I ask is because I am thinking of doing a double header, and of course will need a locomotive with two couplers. I’m not really the kind to modify a locomotive so I would rather leave my locomotive alone than modify it.

                                thanks, trainfam

Many of the Marx diesel locomotives had both front and rear couplers. Some of the plastic bodied E7's and most S2's did. I don't recall any steam locomotives having a front coupler. You might easily attach a coupler to a 1666,400 or 490 plastic bodied steam locomotive by modifying the pilot. Better yet, you could find one with a damaged pilot (Cow catcher) and install a hook coupler that would connect to either a hook or tilt coupler on the lead locomotive tender. What locomotive did you have in mind?

Thanks for the help Ricky, I had a switcher in mind (like the Illinois central). But I can really settle for any locomotive.

The IC Alco S2 switcher comes in several variations. I believe there is a version with two couplers and I would first look for that loco. I believe I have that one in a set. On the single coupler versions, the coupler slot is already there so all you have to do is attach the coupler of your choice -  should be an easy project. As you can see in the photo, the holes are there to attach a coupler. The parts are all available to do this. Hope this helps.
