I recently learned about the Marx "wedge tender", which is wider at the front than at the back. I can imagine how it was intended to make the differences in width between loco and cars less obvious. I have a Marx wind-up #597 loco which is obviously much wider than the typical Marx cars of that era.

I'm interested to know when Marx made the "wedge tender", and what were typical components of sets that included a wedge tender. Also interested to know the general dimension. I haven't had any specific results with searches. Thanks for any info ...

I'm reasonably sure the wedge tenders were around within the first few years of Marx train production. Our new grandpa Steve "Papa" Eastman or Walt Hiteshew over at marxtin.com would be the experts.

The wedge tender was a quite ingenious design in my opinion. The tapered Viewed from the top) design allowed a single style tender to nicely blend with most size locomotives at the front wide end and also not look out of place at the back when mated with 6" tin cars or 3/16 scale cars. A few 3/16 scale passenger sets also had the wedge tender. It was used all the way into the plastic era. Production by Lois Marx was 1940 thru about 1960. In the early 90's, the Flynn's adopted the wedge tender for use in most of it's engine tender sets, whether 6" or 3/16 scale. They continued to use this style till about 2006. Not a bad run for the wedge tender.
