Goodie! Want some kind of preservation of Hawaiian roads.
Very nice. I enjoyed the train many years ago.
Rode that train back in 2009 with my oldest son (then 3), my wife, and my parents. Nice ride with great views. Had a conductor name Uncle Terry who was absolutely fantastic. Loved how when going over one of the trestle sections the engineer would blow extra steam out of the steam chests, made the vegetation very rich there.
Glad to hear the Sugar Cane Train is being kept in service, I thought that there was doubt about it's future awhile back. We rode it in May of 2009, the equipment showed a LOT of Pride went into maintaining it.
When I first saw the Lahaina turntable, I couldn't help but say "It's the Atlas HO turntable" I had never seen, even in pictures a fully timber decked turntable pit, there truly is a Prototype for Everything.
Texassp, what you probably saw was a boiler blow down like in the video above, that would be to remove sediment from the boiler, it could have been opening the cylinder cocks too, but my bet is a boiler blow down.

I road the train back in June 1991 while on my honeymoon. The funniest thing was seeing flat cars with the markings WP&Y.

Glad it's back. It deserved to be kept up and running. Rode it both times we were there.
Doug, that was a boiler blow down. We did it for the camera a couple times tell it started raining. The engineer tried to get as close as she could without scalding me. Stuart not only the flat cars are WP&Y but all the couches were built from the flat cars. They are being repainted right now. They have all kinds of things planned for the future including weddings and night runs. Don
They starting with steam or diesel?
I rode it in 2003 when it was all steam...
They will use the Plymouth for start up. The plan is to rebuild both steam engines. Don
A very nice video, Don. Thanks for sharing. I like seeing the engine run on the authentically rough track.
Don, how old is that video? That steam engine looked to be in fine shape couldn't it be used while the other is rebuilt and then switch so steam would always be available?
Not only does the TT deck put me in mind of the Atlas TT but it rotates rather quickly also.
Joe, that video is about five years old. The railroad really went down hill after that. Sometimes both steam engines were out of operation and the Plymouth had to be used. It derailed three times that I know of. Friday night the train ran again with passengers for the first time. They closed the road Aug. 1 2015. What a great night. They are almost sold out through Christmas. We had Santa with lots of singing of Christmas songs. Folks were having lots of fun. Many locals road the packed train. These are a couple of stills from the video I shot for them. Don

Good to see the road is back in operation. I had no idea they had shut down, one would think a tourist railroad would thrive in HI.
Joe, it shut down about a year and a half ago. It was a mess of a railroad. I have met with the new owner a couple of times and he's going to put a lot into the road. In three short weeks he put a Christmas train together and it has sold out every run. They hadn't done a night run in years and years. Here's the very first and second run of the railroad. Watch in HD. Don
Kama'aina pricing?
Mahalo for the post, Scale Rail. Fond memories.
Aloha
No Kama'aina pricing. $30 a shot. Kids cheaper. Don
