BNSF info from their website says 10' 8" is the maximum width of a load without being classified as oversized. This works out to 2 3/4 inches in 1:48. Anybody ever see a prototype flat car load that extended over the sides of the car? I have a unique load for a flatcar, and the cradles I made for it extend about a scale foot over the sides, I'm sure the issue is will it pass another train without contact especially in the curves. Not trying to be a purist to scale, just curious if overhang was OK in the real world without special handling.
