For your enjoyment a video we shot last night at the NYSW event at the NJ Hi-Railers.  The Mega Motor City Express consists of 2 powered Legacy CSX SD80MACs and FORTY Lionel 89’ Auto Racks.

The video has several views of the train, one of which has a not so happy ending.

Some thoughts on the Auto Racks:

  • They’re light for their size.  Twenty-five ounces each.  I added one ounce of sticky weighs above each truck to cut down on the bouncing.  The first time I ran them (without the weight) they came around a corner, leaned out, snagged on a stanchion and ripped the stanchion right off the bridge.  You can’t run these things too fast.
  • They’re fragile.  My first batch arrived with 3 door brackets broken off.  See picture 1.  The second batch which I just received didn’t have any.  Hope that’s a good sign for their future.
  • They don’t like to back up.    The couplers are articulated to allow them to cut sharp corners while still be fairly close together.  Twice I backup them up at more than a crawl and they derailed, accordioned and the coupler sheared off.  Twice!  You would think I would have learned my lesson after once.  The coupler is held on with a plastic pin.  Seems to be a weak point.  And of course Lionel is out of stock on them.  Maybe they replaced one too many already? See picture 2.
  • I am glad they added some new road names with new colors.  I was getting tired of yellow and brown.
  • And finally the new boxes still say rotating bearing caps but they still don’t have them.

It was quite a struggle to get it to run.  I started straight away with 4 engines (3 powered and a dummy) and the 40 ARs.  I had visions of grandeur! I think I had about 10 derailments the first time around and of course most of them were in tough spots to get to.  Dialed it back to 2 engines and 20 ARs.   That ran great so each time around I added 2 cars until it got up to 40.  Never got to adding the engines as it was getting close to midnight.  They're tucked away in the staging yard so I'll give the 2 other engines a go next week.  Maybe I'll also add Vinny's two to set a new record---- 42 ARs!

Hi,  You may have a switch thrown against the train.  It appears that you are using Z-Stuff switch machines.  I use Z-Stuff DZ-2500 switch machines on my home layout.

Looking at the video, I see both a blinking switch machine red light in the first video and a blinking green light on your last video.

The LED lights on my switch machines always blink in the same way whenever the switch is thrown agains the train.  Sometimes I throw the switch using the button but the switch fails to throw or only throws part way.  This results in a blinking LED when the train passes through the switch.

Still no rotating caps?

I am surprised that two powered locos had a little problem pulling these cars initially. You think a couple of more cars will cause the locos to stall or spin the wheels?

The problem wasn't the pulling power.  The problem was ARs derailing. The 2 SD80s had no issue pulling the 40 ARs up the grade to our helix (hope to get a video of this next time I run it.)  I had numerous derailments and to be frank not sure why backing off to 20 and then slowly adding ARs until I reached 40 worked.  But it did and I'm not one to question success!
