Purchased the Martian cow theft UFO Scene.  Great whimsy item:  the grand kids love it as much as the grand parents do.  The caveat however is that this is the second item that I have ordered from Menards, and just as the first item did, this too needed repair.  The first item I purchased from Menards was the Royal York hotel, and the workmanship was so bad I sent it back for a replacement....which was a little better, not much though.

Look at the picture of the poor farmer being pulled off his "perch"  I guess the Martians are going to take him as well!  I did manage to "fix" the farmer, so that it does work well now, and I didn't have to send the entire box back to Menards.   I am reluctant to order anything else from Menards though.  The item was very well packaged, but it appears this was not assembled correctly at the factory.   IMG_6820

If they are all the same, which I suspect they are, then glue is what is used to hold the "surf board" the farmer stands  on as provided by Menards.  I suspect that all will come loose eventually......as did mine and yours.

I made a piece that is the same size as the "surf board that the farmer stands on.  Made it from plastic, but just a little bit smaller than the "surf board" the farmer stands on.  I didn't want this new piece to interfere with the rocking movement needed to allow animation.  I cleaned up the remaining glue residue from the wire.  On the plastic piece I made, I used a dremel to notch a grove which is where the "assembly" will pivot.  I held the farmer in place in the opening, and then I glued the new piece to the surf board.  This allows  the new "assembly" to rock freely on the wire, yet stay in the cutout which has the wire across it .  The under side of the "surf board" has two little points that stick out, and this is where I put just a drop of glue, so as to not to put any glue where the wire is.  Essentially, I made a sandwich, with the wire in the middle.  I have run this for a while now and so far it is working very well, with the farmer "rocking back and forth" as the cow is going up and down.  Use a quick drying glue, by the way, as you will have to hold this assemble in place by hand so that the glue will dry, and the assembly not come apart.  It took me a couple of times to get it right.

I know this sounds kind of convoluted, but I hope it makes sense enough for you to do the repair.

AMF,

Fantastic! And, yes, I see it all now. Or at least in my head since I don't have it in front of me.

I was looking at it more last night and realized that the bottom piece of the "sandwich" came off. Also noted the two little points which create the small gap for the rod and allows the whole assembly to rock back and forth.

Will give this a shot soon. Thanks!
