I have just come across my first MS. Did this beast actually exist? Wow. It’s beautiful. Next question: does this exist in nice o-gauge?

Yes, of course it did. That is a nice photo of the prototype. You might try contacting the New York Central Historical &Technical Society for more information. Also Try Googling the NYC Mercury.

Yes again. Sunset/3rd Rail made the entire train set and locomotive.
As a matter of fact, yes.
The Art Deco period produced some of America's finest work. Whether it was art, industrial design, architecture and probably clothing. This is simply my opinion.

Thank you. It was really something. I bet it would have looked very fashionable at Union Station Cincy
3rd Rail did the engine and 6 cars. The cars are unique as they were streamlined heavyweights. The engine was not one of 3rd Rails better efforts as its actually die cast, not brass and siderods and valve gear is made of pretty soft metal. It does run OK. Still its a must have for a NYC modeler.
Syracuse, NY on its way to the Big Four.

Well that Sunset train set just went to the top of my list. Just lovely. Thanks for the info.

Isn't the Lionel 1689E a Commodore Vanderbilt ?
Since we have opened the Art Deco box, I thought a few images from the period would be of interest to some.
Whoops, a couple of photos snuck in there.

The engine comes up fairly frequently. The cars, not so much. Good luck in your quest.

A fellow had the train for sale w/o the locomotive at last week's Cleveland 2 rail show.

I too, have the 3rd rail diecast Mercury. If you want a 'sound' tip if you own one and want to upgrade the generic file, I ordered from Lionel from their NYC 2-6-0 sound card years ago. It sounds FANTASTIC! in this engine. The # is 691-RS4E-035. With the parts sale happening this week (11-19) it would be a bargain. The whistle sound sounds like it belongs in the engine.

I have to question anyone who thinks the "upside-down bathtub" look is "beautiful."
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Or so I have heard. It is cool. Look how tiny the men look next to it. It is impressive, if that word works better for you. I like it myself.
