I'm playing around with a used digital multimeter, a kind of nice auto ranging, data logging, TRMS type, Extech brand.  I think it's way out of calibration.  When I meter a household receptacle with my cheap harbor freight DMM, I get 120VAC.  With the other TRMS I get between 85-90VAC.

Have any of you sent your more expensive meters out for calibration?  I'm waiting on a few quotes from some labs.  I'm curious to see if it's economical to have it done, or if I should just pick up a new one from ebay.

I really don't need a TRMS datalogger, but you guys always have me wanting bigger & better stuff!!!

Thanks

Chris

Chris,

Save yourself the money, unless you just have to have your current meter for employment purposes. I don't know if buying one off the bay is wise or not. My last purchase came from Wally World. It was under $30.00 and it's the better model.

I agree with Pappy.  I had a Fluke meter that had drifted out of cal over the years to where I no longer trusted.  Checking what it would cost to have it calibrated, it ended up being the price of the meter!  You can't even talk to a calibration lab for less than $100.

I ended up buying the Mastech MS8226T True RMS meter for $43, it was a great buy.  It has all the usual measurements, but also frequency, capacitance, temperature, and is a true-RMS meter.

Wow, you guys were correct as usual!  Factory calibration quote was $120, and a lab out of OH was $105.  And I even asked for a non NIST job.  I know when we buy instruments for work, the NIST certificate typically adds $100-200.  I'll look around on the 'bay.  Thanks again. Chris.
