I am currently assembling typical Mexican mixed trains in N, HO, S and O scales. I know that Atlas O recently offered a 50-foot NdeM boxcar, but am not aware if Lionel, MTH, Weaver, Williams or other manufacturers have ever produced Mexican rolling stock or locomotives? Have I overlooked anything? I am primarily interested in the 1970's to 1986 era when Ferrocarril del Pacifico, Sonora-Baja California, Chihuahua al Pacifico and Unidos del Sureste were the primary regional railways in the shadow of the National Railways of Mexico. Many model railroaders who don't keep up with railroading south of the border don't realize that NdeM is a fallen flag to the same extent as Conrail or Southern Pacific. Today's big three in Mexico are Ferromex, Ferrosur and Kansas City Southern de Mexico, and intercity passenger trains are nearly non-existant.

Hi, Gil.

Since you mentioned HO, Atlas has recently released two units decorated for NdeM, a high nose U30B and an RSD-5. The U30B represents the former N&W units which were among numerous locomotives rebuilt by GE at the former Erie shop in Hornell, NY and shipped south of the border during the late 70s and early 80s.

Good luck,

Bob

Hi, John.

I did a search and there were a few hits for a Lionel Ferromex SD70ACe. Looking through Lionel's website, I found mention of a Ferromex unit in the listing for the models of BNSF and KCS SD70ACes but nothing else. Perhaps this was a model which Lionel cataloged but later cancelled? I no longer stay informed with Lionel developments so I can't say for sure.

A number of Ferromex models have been offered in HO and N scales so modelers are enjoying better success in this regard in those scales.

So I'm not alone. I have the Lionel NdeM centipede (great price from Legacy Station),

the Pacifico boxcar from JD's and my custom-painted/decaled (by me) Weaver FA-2

(same paint scheme as the Centipede - the NdeM "Warbonnet", as I see it).

I'd love some more Mexican rolling stock (not to mention some of their steamers,

like their Hudsons and the 4-8-4's that they called "Niagras" - yes the spelling is

correct for the NdeM).

Thanks to all who have added information to this thread. Although Rusty stated that there has never been a commercially available Mexican roadname item in S scale, a few years ago I commissioned S-Helper Service to produce a run of 250 NdeM 40-foot steel boxcars. I have just posted a Sell or Trade ad in the OGR forum offering these cars in units of one, two, six or 12 cars. The 12-piece cartons at $375 work out to $31.25 per car, nearly half of what MTH will soon be asking for one car.
