I'll start this week with more from my trip to Sand Patch grade 2 weekends ago. (See last week's thread for a sampler of my 3-day weekend in PA.)
On Sunday, 10/16/16, I made my way (slowly) to the famous overlook near Glencoe,PA. The RR name is Foley, and the B&O/Chessie had a tower located here until 1972. There is still a small shack here to accommodate a switchman, as the crossovers here were manually controlled for emergency use only. A third track also began here and ran to Manila, it was removed in the late 1950s.
I arrived about 9a.m., and quickly set up, anticipating the eastbound Capitol Limited, which passed by almost silently, hardly disturbing the deer that graze along the Right of way.
After a lengthy single-level stack train following Amtrak, we then had 4 westbounds in a little more than a hour, the 3 following the first one catching yellow blocks and slowing even more.
Only one had a helper, but one train was overpowered for its length and another was an empty hopper train.
