Good morning! Welcome to another issue of Midweek Photos. A weekly collection of real railroad photos we have captured and want to share. Perhaps you caught a train passing your traffic jam, or took a rail trip, or even strolled along a rail trail that went by an active railroad yard.
Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton took their show on the road again this past weekend with a 104-mile round trip train to East Stroudsburg, PA. GP9 514 was teamed with F3 664 for the journey. Because of the operation this day, a temporary block station, Crosby, was created to help in maneuvering the action.
On the opposite side of the same station sign sat a fundraising train for the Erie Lackawanna Dining Car Preservation Society. Delaware Lackawanna RR M636 number 3643 powers the west end of the train.
The Steamtown train brought a host of people in Civil War garb, representing various generals of the battles. The lady represents a doctor-general who tells of the surgical methods employed during the conflict.
Louisa May Alcott also spoke to the audience.
The Philadelphia Brigade Band performed as well. The instruments are 150 years or so old, with the exception of the piccolo. I am told woodwinds don't hold up as well as brass instruments.
Engineer Tom Shore posed with President Lincoln before we began the return journey.
An intermediate stop was made on the return in Tobyhanna, PA.
I don't know who made that flag, but it seems like too many stars for the 1860s…
And here we are. Back safely in Scranton. It was a very unusual day. Warm and gloomy in the morning, spots of misty rain throughout the day, and then cold and sunny by late in the day.
As you can tell by the photos, Fall is in full swing in Pennsylvania. Time to look back at your photos from 2014, so we can have a year-in-review on the week between Christmas and New Years. Post any pictures you might like here, and share the fun of rail fanning.
