Hey, Gang.  Wednesday has arrived already.  Not only are the days getting shorter here in the Northern Hemisphere, but the weeks seem to be also.

Here are a few shots I was able to snag the past few days.

Since last Saturday was really nice weather, I decided to get some new angles on the Steamtown yard trains called the Scranton Limited.  Not all of my ideas worked out too well, as you can see above.

However, when I reached the track level, I caught this classic image of her backing down past the old Mattes St. Tower.

A nice surprise was catching Delaware Lackawanna's train getting ready to pull out as soon as the Limited cleared the switch.

In the lead was former Erie-Lackawanna 2452, along with partner 2461.  Both are C425s.

Smoking up more than all the others was Central of New Jersey RS3 number 1554.

Following the RS is C420 414 from the Lehigh Valley, and C425 painted in the D-L's corporate colors.

These cars are all sand cars.  The train may look like it is headed to the Poconos, but it is not.

They actually had to pull west to clear the same switch as the passenger train needed.  Backing down this track allowed the sand cars to reach the former Delaware & Hudson line leading to Carbondale, PA.

The long shadows are actually cast around noon.  Shorter days mean more limited rail fanning options.

That was my day.  How did you do?  Any cool locations or trains caught by your camera or phone of late?  If you were lucky, please post your shots right here.

Have a great time, and be safe out there.

Some pics taken this week in Detroit's Milwaukee Junction. Now that I'm going to school and living in downtown Detroit I've been able to catch lots of trains just a few blocks from where I'm living

I've only heard Alcos pulling freight a few times.  It was pretty impressive and I clearly remember it.

This week I'm switching gears a little.  I did get out one night a popped a shot of the RCPE, but only one.  The wind has been very strong here, and that's not good for expensive flash perched 13 ft. up on pole.  I am learning!    One of my favorite things to photo are the little shortline railroads, the ones everyone else overlooks for a number of reasons, starting with they often have no real schedule and are hard to catch!  A few weeks ago I managed to catch a very elusive one, the Minnesota Southern Railway.  Engineer was the MILW veteran Herb Tollefson, and the traveling conductor protecting the crossings was "Mike".

The MSRY operates on old Rock Island tracks from UP interchange in Worthington, MN to BNSF interchange at Manley, MN (right at SD border.)  At one time the tracks continued to Sioux Falls, but they haven't seen a train run past Manley for at least a couple of decades now.  The little three man operation is headquartered in the old depot in Luverne, MN.  This depot was spruced up and featured in Ken Burns' film on WW2 a few years ago.  The railroad is owned by Brent Polanchek and his wife.  At one time they hauled a decent amount of grain, but since Poet built a small ethanol plant in Luverne, all of the grain traffic disappeared.  They have two GP7 from the mid 1950s as power, and generally haul about 15 or so tankers to/from Worthington, about 30 miles to the east.  With gasoline prices down, the ethanol traffic is also down.  On this trip they were only hauling 6 empty tankers back to Luverne, using one GP7.  The round trip of ~60 miles takes all day.

Life has not been easy for this little railroad.  Back in June the historic rain we had washed out nearly half a mile of their tracks, causing about a million dollars in damage.  The Nobles County commissioners were balking at helping rebuild the line, but after a month the railroad managed to get some federal disaster money.  The future of the MSRY has always been quite "iffy"; their predecessor, the Nobles Rock Railroad, went bankrupt.  The best thing that could happen for them would be for the ethanol business to go belly up.  They could then resume hauling grain, which would dramatically increase their tonnage.

The photos below are not only a snapshot in time, but also of a tiny operation in its daily struggle just to survive as they run their rusting engines down the "spaghetti" tracks.  The equipment is old and worn, as are the tracks, as are the men.  They just keep pluggin along though.
