Welcome to Wednesday, and November. Yet another year is slipping through our fingers, which leads me to remind you to start thinking of the Year in Review version of the thread coming up the Wednesday after Christmas.  With December 25 being on a Sunday this year, that means the Review thread will be on December 28.  Now, on with the past week.

Now, on with the thread.  On October 26, while driving home from work, I was stopped by a freight train.  I counted 35 of these shorty covered hoppers.  The railroad is Delaware Lackawanna in Scranton, PA.  The location is the state office building lot on Lackawanna Ave where the old Delaware & Hudson passenger station once stood.

The track slopes down as this connector track which once joined the DL&W with the D&H mainlines, drops about 35 feet in a 4 block distance.  It is now called the strawberry hill line.

Four units pushed these cars in the clear.  Back to life as usual.

These last three shots are from Saturday, October 29.  Steamtown's Scranton Limited train continued rolling through the city on the old Delaware Lackawanna & Western RR.  We see 0-6-0 no 26 passing the old DL&W steam engine shops.

And, in a strange purplish glow, she is approaching the former DL&W station.  That's my contribution for the week.  Have fun!  The US election is this coming Tuesday, so we'll see you the day after.

Sunday was the last day of railroad operations at Greenfield Village for the year.

A quick picture I shot in the morning before departing for our day of runs.  Fall is my favorite time of year because it usually means my favorite locomotive is in service, our 1873 Mason 0-6-4T.  Always a bittersweet day, because the operating season wears me out, but dumping the last fire of the year is always just a little sad.  Thing's will be back up and running in April for the 2017 season.

A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I took an early morning ride up to Sand Patch, at the Deil Road bridge, which spans the west slope of Sand Patch very near the peak of the grade. We just missed the Capitol Limited as it slipped around the curve at the bridge on it's way east to Cumberland.

We did manage to catch two freights, however, in mostly nice morning light.

  • DR2: Same train, west bound in the sun. Looking west from the bridge.
  • DR3: Later, a coal haul struggles east bound.
  • DR4: Same train in full sun. Working hard!
  • DR5: Looking east, the coal haul is crossing to head east on westbound track.
  • DR6: Got near the row, caught coal haul helpers returning westbound track.
  • DR7: As the helpers pass, I get a shot of the helper link on 260.
