Hello, everyone, and Happy New Year! I have not been out taking photos since before Christmas; mainly due to lack of motivation. A friend clued me in on the where-abouts of a locomotive that is leaving our area, and that was what got me out of the house on my day off.
This GP9 has been in Pocono Summit working at the grain mill for over a decade. It was replaced by a different locomotive in the summer, so now it is outbound for re-sale or whatever. The colors and stripes harken back to it's previous owner, the Belt Railway of Chicago. The location is Steamtown National Historic Site last Friday, Jan 29.
While there, I grabbed this shot of Rahway Valley no. 15, a 2-8-0 from 1916, and a freight train of local railroad's cars.
Since it was sunny out, I went to see what is in the other local railroad yards. In Pittston, PA, the Reading & Northern Railroad staged this SD50, painted in one of their Fast Freight Service colors. So far, only 5018 and 5019 bear these colors, and they are marked differently.
On the southern edge of the yard, I found these switcher units sitting with the bay window caboose. On the left is 802, an SW8, and on the right is 1548, which is an MP15.
Way back, in black is GP38 no. 2015. I wish I brought along my telephoto lens for this one.
The next railroad keeps its engine house about two blocks south of the Reading & Northern RR yard. Newly arrived in the area is this SW1200, no 1265. RJ Corman recently took over operations at the Luzerne & Susquehanna and the nearby Lehigh Railway. We will be seeing a lot more red on the rails locally due to this change. In back, is former Pennsylvania RR no. 1751, which has operated in this area most of its life, as Pocono Northeast RR 1751 and Luzerne & Susquehanna 1751.
That is my contribution for the week. I hope that some of you like winter railroading enough to share some of your shots. However, if you have older images of the real railroad, we don't mind. Have a great week. I hope to see you next Wednesday.
