Welcome once again to another episode of MidWeek Photos. At the very end of January, Steamtown NHS in Scranton made a big step forward in the re-assembly of Baldwin Locomotive Works no. 26.
Her frame was mated to her wheels. This is the first time they have been together since wheel work began in 2006. New tires were sweated on in Jan, 2007. Frame straightening, drive box and binder work has taken place, along with milling down the seat for the valves. Just to mention a few things that have taken place.
As the frame was lowered, three mechanics made sure the 6 drive boxes fit perfectly with the shoes and wedges that will hold them in check. They were bolting the binders in place when I took this photo.
The old DL&W railroad shop hosts this 30-ton overhead crane to stabilize the pieces as they fall in place.
A lot of little steps go into getting this big piece together, but the work isn't over yet. Newly cast steam delivery pipes need to be inserted connecting the cylinder saddle with the smokebox. Machining of these is underway today.
There is still work going on in the boiler. Fire tubes are being safe-welded in the firebox, and other adjustments made. It won't be long before this will be affixed to the chassis.
So how was your week? Did any interesting trains roll past your door? Even if you have an old picture to share, we are still interested. Enjoy your time trackside
