Tamaqua, PA.  One of the larger coal towns on the old Reading system.  This area was very grim in the 1980s and 90s, but redevelopment of the train station led to eventually turning this block into a railroad park.

And at least one reminder that we are in Pennsylvania's Slate Belt.  Another heavy commodity that brought some funds to the railroad.

This fireless steam engine features Reddy Kilowatt on the nose.  Pennsylvania Power and Light Co. had several streamlined fireless cookers.

... along with two New Haven cabooses.  The Reading & Northern still runs through here on a regular basis, but I did not get a chance to catch one of their freights.

Here is "The Four and a Quarter" (Reading & Northern 425; Baldwin, 1928; Gulf, Mobile & Northern) highballing past the Tamaqua station. Opened in 1874, this was the last station other than the Franklin Street Station at 7th & Penn Streets in Reading to have a working lunch counter. After Conrail closed offices there, a local committee, SOS (Save Our Station) acquired it. Members spent the next 15 years restoring it. Today The Restaurant at the Station serves fine food Wednesday through Sunday there. Check out the Website: www.therestaurantatthestation.com
