Happy Earth Day, ladies and gentlemen!  For this week's Midweek Photos, I decided to show you all of the rail action in North America... all at once LOL  Of course, from this distance, a lot of the details of a single train operation get lost.  But with good timing, lighting and a good lens, you might have a great combination of distance and train action.  This helps to give a sense of "place" among our train pictures.

I was lucky on Saturday, April 18, as I had the combination of all three, when Steamtown began operations of their Scranton Limited trains for 2015.  With a crystal clear sky, and my telephoto lens, I captured the above images as the train passed Mattes St. Tower, the Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel and passed over the Spruce St. Complex.  I was about 1/2 mile from the tracks in getting these shots of the 10:30 train.

Using a more conventional lens (18-55 mm) I took these images of 11:30's train, closer to the tracks by the University of Scranton.

On Sundays, Steamtown runs this same train an extra mile to reach Nay Aug Park, and a bridge that spans the Roaring Brook.  Here are some of the telephoto views.

And three more of the same train with the conventional lens.  The above 6 photos were taken from the ledges around the face of the Nay Aug Tunnel.

The good thing about this train is that it runs several times in a day, and at a rather slow speed, so it's great to get the photos you want.

More often than not, trains travel at a speed you can't catch it more than once. That is when your timing is most important.

If you have had good fortune in catching trains lately, from a distance or up close, please share any photos you like here.  Chances are we will like them too.

Have a great week.  See you next Wednesday.

Amtrak AEM-7 Coming at you.. Baltimore's Penn Station. April 1986.

This was a telephoto shot of an oncoming train - the focus is pretty good considering.

March 1989 Riverside shops Baltimore. SD18 - only a lttle over a hundred were ever built and the majority of them were sold to foreign railroads. C&O bought 19 and were one of the largest owners of this model. Decent locomotive but not a good seller.

I got a new camera and have been trying it out a bit, lots of stuff to learn and get used to.

But I also got this shot I have been wanting to take off the small bluff at Rockview MO. Well, things worked out well the other day, there were a lot of trains on April 20, 2015, including two BNSF. Although the clouds came and went and the wind was blowing pretty good things worked out pretty good!

Lots of odd ball power, both CP and CN from the north and FXE from south of the border.

UP 3934 North rolls though Delta Mo on the former Cotton Belt main line, awhile back the Missouri Pacific's Belmont Branch crossed here and was protected by a gate. The Frisco was also in town, just to the north.

UP 7916 North, ZLDYC, rumbles across the BNSF diamond beneath the bridge at Rockview.

CP 8868 North, UP train QNLCH, heads into the siding for a meet. The siding at Rockview is named Quarry. CP power is not real common down this way.

UP 7642 South, grain train GMDM3A out of Des Moines, is about to slam the BNSF diamond beneath the Hyw M bridge.

CN 5681 South, UP train ZSMMXX, rolls past the UP-BNSF connection.

BNSF 4029 South, MSTLMEM, rolls toward the UP diamond at Rockview and crew change just ahead at Chaffee, MO.

BNSF 6105 South, coal load, about to bang across the UP diamond at Rockview.  At Chaffee, about two miles south, a new crew will take over.

This fell off the original post, so adding it here,

Had an appointment this morning and of course I grabbed my camera.  Had about 2 hours to kill after it so I went into Mt Clemens to see if there was any trains.  Didn't see anything so I went over to the Michigan Transit Museums storage siding.  It is hard to get photos there but was able to go into the yard next door to it.  Climb onto a small dirt mound and get a shot of their Alco S-1 Switcher.  It is pretty beat up but does run.  They do not use it much anymore.

They also have an old GTW caboose.

As I was leaving I saw a train coming in the distance.

It was a CN still in GTW paint running long hood foward, pulling about 10 cars.

I drove to downtown to see the train switching out some cars.

I was then running out of time and had to go home.

I have a short video I took also but will edit it and upload it in a few hours.

Please note:  I have listened to the complaints about my water marks.  I will not remove them to post the photos on here as I have had several photos stolen from me in the past.  They were even from forum members.  I have relocated the water marks so they are not right across the photo.   If you would like to see a un-water marked version please visit my site.

Stay tuned to for the short video soon!
