Happy Wednesday, Mr and Mrs America and all the ships at sea. People from other countries, too.
Last Wednesday, we celebrated Earth Day, and in some areas that is also Arbor Day. Day to tend to your garden and possibly plant a tree to improve the air. Thursday had different ideas for many of us in Northern Pennsylvania and New York State. Waves of lake effect snow travelled East to remind us that snow is part of Spring, too. But the trains still kept rolling.
Viewed from my attic window, Steamtown National Historic Site's half hour trip called the Scranton Limited traveled through downtown Scranton, PA, trying to stay ahead of the snow. However, by the time it reached the halfway point to return to the roundhouse, it was in white-out conditions.
I have no photos of the snow falling on the train. You couldn't tell where it was, due to the thickness of the snowfall.
It was a bit sunnier and somewhat warmer on Saturday, April 25, when I went to catch Steamtown's first excursion of the year. This was an inbound train, running from Jessup, Pa, with pick up points in Olyphant and Dickson City, to take riders to Scranton where there was a kickoff celebration for the city's 150th birthday. The two car train is traveling here through a neighborhood called Pine Brook in the north end of Scranton. The train is led by Delaware-Lackawanna C420 number 405. Originally, it was a Lehigh Valley unit.
The passenger train is at the south end of the one-time Delaware & Hudson RR Green Ridge yard. The low white concrete railing is where the tracks cross over Green Ridge Street.
So, while passenger season is underway where I live, how about in your area? Many parts are freight-only. If you caught any neat images of trains that you want to share, we want to see them! Thanks to all who make this a dynamic part of the week. Enjoy your time trackside.
