Happy Wednesday, Mr and Mrs America and all the ships at sea.  People from other countries, too.

Last Wednesday, we celebrated Earth Day, and in some areas that is also Arbor Day.  Day to tend to your garden and possibly plant a tree to improve the air.  Thursday had different ideas for many of us in Northern Pennsylvania and New York State.  Waves of lake effect snow travelled East to remind us that snow is part of Spring, too.  But the trains still kept rolling.

Viewed from my attic window, Steamtown National Historic Site's half hour trip called the Scranton Limited traveled through downtown Scranton, PA, trying to stay ahead of the snow.  However, by the time it reached the halfway point to return to the roundhouse, it was in white-out conditions.

I have no photos of the snow falling on the train.  You couldn't tell where it was, due to the thickness of the snowfall.

It was a bit sunnier and somewhat warmer on Saturday, April 25, when I went to catch Steamtown's first excursion of the year.  This was an inbound train, running from Jessup, Pa, with pick up points in Olyphant and Dickson City, to take riders to Scranton where there was a kickoff celebration for the city's 150th birthday.  The two car train is traveling here through a neighborhood called Pine Brook in the north end of Scranton.  The train is led by Delaware-Lackawanna C420 number 405.  Originally, it was a Lehigh Valley unit.

The passenger train is at the south end of the one-time Delaware & Hudson RR Green Ridge yard.  The low white concrete railing is where the tracks cross over Green Ridge Street.

So, while passenger season is underway where I live, how about in your area?  Many parts are freight-only.  If you caught any neat images of trains that you want to share, we want to see them!  Thanks to all who make this a dynamic part of the week.  Enjoy your time trackside.

This U36c wears her Seaboard System grey paint well into the CSX era. I always liked the look of this paint scheme.

P.S. the unit next to it, in Chessie paint also has had its reporting mark changed to "CSXT" via stencil.

CSX 7303 U30C Mar 89-1

MARC (Maryland Rail Commuter) train F units - May 1986

MARC 7181 May 86-1

MARC 7185 May 86-1

End of the line for this little guy

When "Lafondue" ride the Fondue train...things happen !!!

This past Saturday, went on to ride the Fondue Train who run here in the area between Bulle and Montbovon. It's operated by the local transit authority (TPF) and ride on the narrow gauge (1m) part of their network (the rest being standard gauge).

The historic consist is composed of a 1922 electric Be 4/4 railcar,

 300-2015.04.25-111056 [Large)

a 1906 2 axles passenger car,

 301-2015.04.25-111603 [Large)

a 1926 passengers car,

302-2015.04.25-131228 [Large)

and also a 1926 lounge car,

with a very nice interior.

The ride is nice and it's always cool to stand on the open platform between cars,

 303-2015.04.25-114133 [Large)

and offer a good view of the 13th century castle and town of Gruyeres and surrounding mountains. (even with a less than perfect weather)

 304-2015.04.25-114007 [Large)

And of course a Fondue is served on board.

 305-2015.04.25-122004 [Large)

What is usually not included in the trip, is the derailement of the railcar during the switching around, in Montbovon, for the return ride.

For an unknown reason, the rear truck of the railcar decided to follow the other direction going over a switch. (Maybe, and just maybe, since it's a manual switch, the engineer did not engage the lever properly in the open position, and the passing front truck pushed back the switch to the closed position.)

Yup, at this point, it's end of the day for #116.

300-2015.04.25-130005 [Large)

Was kind of lucky to be able to catch the moment the railcar jumped the tracks.

Well that's it for this week,

Sincerely, from this area of the world.

Great story, Wyhog.  Reminds me of the story of the guy who was running the Royal Gorge train a few years ago.

As things warmed up, I've slowed down, but two weekends ago I did make it to Chicago for the annual Foamers Ball in Lake Forest.  Five hours before my 8am flight was to leave, the airline cancelled it!  There were no flights from Sioux Falls, Sioux City, Omaha, Twin Cities--finally got what was the last seat on the only flight available.  Yup, drove 250 miles to Fargo ND to catch a plane to Chicago.   That meant I didn't get to run around downtown any on Friday this year.

I did rent a car at the airport since I didn't have time to take the Blue Line to downtown and then a Metra to Lake Forest.  On Saturday night I & a buddy went to ride the Loop trains.  I got a few shots.  One CTA officer suggested we go to the Chinatown platform to catch outbound trains with the city as a back drop.  Got there and took a few shots, and another CTA employee told us we had to have permission to take photos.  I recited the official CTA policy, and she said we could tell it to the city police.  She picked up a phone at a call box and pretended to call.  I could see the cable was cut long ago.  I requested she call her supervisor in.  About then a train roared up, and the doors on the last car opened, about 5 feet away from us.  Marijuana smoke came pouring out and there were half a dozen rough looking guys sitting in there smoking dope.  She stepped over and said, "Excuse me, no smoking on the train."  That was it?   She hassles a couple of obvious tourists for taking a few photos of the skyline, threatens to call the police?  But with guys smoking dope it's "Excuse me......."   LOL here!  I told her the Chicago police likely had higher priorities on a late Saturday night than a couple of guys taking photos, following all the posted rules, and not bothering anybody.  She gave up and left.    So anyway, some shots.

I don't often name my photos, but the last one I will.  It was getting very late and there was a long time between trains.  During the day the downtown platforms are full of people scurrying on & off. Noise and chaos rules the day!  At night, the people are gone.  The platforms become a well lit, quiet sanctuary from the street below.  I like the peacefulness--it reminds me of nights out alone on the prairie!  In the last shot, a CTA Loop train is leaving and only one person remains behind, alone on a bench.  I call this shots, "Left Behind."

Bad Tie was replaced, but spikes ignored one tie away.

A westbound train on the Fort Wayne Line with two four axle units in the lead.  I was concentrating so much on taking pictures, I didn't notice the cab until getting ready to post.

Close up of cab of 5632.

Just managed to get a shot of 5629 on the tail end of the westbound.  Karen remembers seeing an engineer in this unit.

Great pics everyone.  Lafondue great pics from abroad. Here are a few pics from Lincoln,  I was at our training center for some reserts. The last photo is a option to all those containers that get shipped from over seas. They make great burn rooms. Nick 20150424_130712
