Welcome to Wednesday, and welcome to May!  It's been a quick week, and I wanted to share some steam power with you.  Get your photos of real trains out, so you can share your diesels, or eco-friendly fuel engines with me and the rest who routinely log into our community.

Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, PA began the third season of operation of their pride and joy, Baldwin Locomotive Works no. 26 this past April 21.  This 0-6-0 turns 90 years old next March, and she runs like a dream after a multi-year restoration.  We see her alongside the roundhouse this past Sunday as she is getting a couple loads of coal.

Because no. 26 is a hand-fired steam engine, the dust content of the coal needs to be lower than with a stoker-driven firebox locomotive.  The coal is set in buckets like we see on the forklift, and they add the coal by tipping the bucket.

Whatever gets the job done, right?

And here she is on the turntable, before heading in the roundhouse (stall 18) for the evening.

Once again, I headed north up into Minnesota over the weekend.  I figured it was my last chance to see some snow.  The trains continue to run pretty regularly which makes me more likely to take a chance and drive further out.  It's been quite breezy with winds ranging from 25-45 mph.  That makes me very hesitant to set up flash for night shots!  If I do, I weight them down with tie plates or railroad ties.   The weather forecast seems to be very good for this coming weekend, and the snow drifts are gone.  I've put my wife on notice that I'd like to head back up into North Dakota this weekend and try photo'ing the huge trestle over Lake Ashatbula on the BNSF KO sub again Saturday night.  The weather is supposed to be perfect and the mosquitoes & buffalo gnats don't seem to have awakened yet.  Downside is it doesn't get dark until nearly 9 pm now, but hey we can sleep in the next morning.   It will be worth it.  Anyway, some shots:

1. Garrettson, SD.  BNSF n/b manifest train coming through the big cut.  The sky isn't cloudy, it's full of windblown dust!

2. Jasper, MN.  BNSF n/b manifest train  passing a parked grain train.

3. Florence, MN.  BNSF n/b manifest train crossing my favorite little trestle.  This was about the last of the snow!  This was just four days ago, and two days ago it hit 82 degrees there.

4. Fairview, SD.  D&I s/b quarry train (84 loads) crossing the Big Sioux River.  The river is running high from the snow melt. I think it's about 14 feet or so deep at the trestle.  During the summer there isn't enough water here to reliably float my kayak.  I was thinking of anchoring my kayak  out on the river at another bridge for another shot, but after watching the force of the water and large tree trunks go whizzing by for awhile I thought better of it.  That will have to wait for another day when the river falls and slows down.  That might be awhile.
