We have made it to Wednesday; can Friday be that far behind?

This week, Midweek Photos brings you some action footage from Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, PA.  On May 9, Baldwin 26, an 0-6-0 built in March 1929 as a shop goat for the Baldwin plant in Eddystone, PA, saw the reassembly of the boiler with the frame and wheels.

IMG_0302

The boiler was taken off the frame several years ago so the firebox could be replaced, and the frame straightened.

IMG_0304

The frame and wheels were recently painted in the original Baldwin olive green with aluminum striping.  We see the side rods sitting off to the left.

Now it's time to lift.  The 30-ton crane lifted the boiler only a few feet to be moved over and placed on the frame.  For the last few minutes, I took video.  Check the link.

And it doesn't stop there.  Her tender was in the paint booth this past weekend getting prepped for her own coat of green paint.

Not every week is this exciting, but the past week showed huge improvement in this project... a total rebuild of an American classic.

Now it's your turn to take the thread and make it as interesting as the varied world of real railroading... in the US and around the world.  Enjoy!!

Great pics Tim,

Is that the little Baldwin switcher that Steamtown has had there for years.  I haven't seen it in a while and thought it had left.  Also I live in Old Forge, and was interested in maybe helping out in the roundhouse on repairs restorations.  I am a former auto and diesel mechanic and was thinking on voulenteering.

Glad you liked the photos.  #7 was built in 1897 and completed her first test runs last Friday.  A few issues popped up, but nothing that can't be repaired.  That photo was taken after the headlamp was lit for the first time and I slid it into the headlight housing.  The smoke is from the burning kerosene.

The second photo is of our 1932 "frankenstein" 4-4-0 (built out of an 1870's Manchester 0-4-0 with some pieces from two other locomotives), while we were in our yard area to load up on coal.

Jake,

I for one am quite jealous of your new found role. There used to be a very long waiting list to be there at the shops, I waited years without contact, could not do it at the time when they did. For those who have never been to Greenfield Village / Henry Ford Museum, you don't know what your missing. I freely admit I always "overstay my welcome" when visiting and I'm local. Tons and tons(literally) of beautiful stuff. Mechanical, industrial, architecture, science, social, government, automotive, R.R., and some just plain oddball world history. Maybe 3-5 days straight would actually satisfy me. If they let me touch more I would never leave. Oh, that's not counting the tons of different kinds of major special events and exhibits covering government to toys, weddings to marathons. Hey, even if it pours, or someone in your group is too cool for a village/museum, and/or/after the Village/Museum is closed, there's a big ole I-max theater right there, and shopping nearby too. "No tells", Super 8, Red Roof, Hyatt, Ritz, etc. and the Village Inn all within 5-6 miles max.  20 min from metro airport. 10 min from Amtrack. Hey, their keeping steam alive, come visit .

Fascinating C&NW pictures, Bill. They have three of those bi-levels out at IRM, and use them in excursion service. People who never commuted enjoy riding them, and kids love riding in the upper level. I commuted through North Western Station every day back in the 70's, so the pics really take me back. (I wish IRM had one of those CNW E8's!)  Thanks for posting them!

Some great steam locomotive pics.  Out here on the West Coast...and the San Francisco Bay Area in particular...the operational steamer is the Southern Pacific 2472.  It's a P-8 4-6-2 Pacific.  It is located at the Golden Gate Railroad Museum in Niles Canyon, in the East Bay Area.  I have occassion to ride on it numerous times and assist in filming it.  Matt

Nice shots above, looks like the fan railroads are back up and running!  I headed down to Kansas City last week for their Railfan Day, at Union Station.  Lots of people showed up.  I got one shot I kind of liked of a first gen EMD in K.C. Southern paint.  Shots two and three are of the D&I Railroad rolling by south of Fairfield, and then in Canton SD.  I used my c.1902 Kodak Brownie No. 2 Model B for all shots.  It's over 110 years old and still clicking!

On another day to work i passed by the Rockland yard and i saw the Pair of FL 9s on the turntable being serviced and placed back to back, so out came the camera for these shots for the F unit fans, for us locals we have not seen the 488 and 489 back to back since the beginning of excursion service when they were used in tandem for the six car consist, but since then, they both went through major overhauls down in Morristown,NJ and will now pull the consist running alone. One some rare occasions they put them on the ends of the consist push pull style, Gman.
