Happy Summer, everyone!  Spring was a lot of fun, but with school getting out, and vacation time kicking in, we can go outside to capture the wide world of railroading in all of its forms.  Here are a few that I was able to catch for Midweek Photos.

I stumbled upon this train yesterday around lunchtime Delaware Lackawanna C424 no 2457 along with Lackawanna RR diner 469, Nickel Plate sleeper 211 and Erie Lackawanna business car 2 sitting near Bridge 60 in Scranton.  This train would go on a jaunt northeast to Carbondale on the former Delaware & Hudson RR line. It was chartered by the Lackawanna County commissioners.

Neil Finch of the Erie Lackawanna Dining Car Preservation Society was host aboard the diner and sleeper.

Engineer aboard the 50 year old Alco was Chris LaBar.

I also tried to fiddle around with the telephoto lens capturing an image of Reading Company FP7 no 903 at Steamtown.  For some reason, the results were less than spectacular.

A couple shots from my trip to Chicago and a few other places while I was in town for the Joliet Rocket this weekend.

After arriving back in Joliet, my coworker, girlfriend and I headed out to the Illinois Railway Museum for a visit before they closed.

One of the few diesels I've been wanting to see for years, Burlington E5 9911.  What an awesome locomotive to see in person.

A sister to the Detroit and Lima Northern #7 locomotive that I work on, former Toledo and Detroit 4-4-0 #16, which was once a part of the DT&I.  Both engines were saved by Henry Ford upon selling the railroad in the late 1920's, and they were displayed in the Henry Ford Museum together for many years.  The locomotive was traded to IRM for Bessemer 2-8-0 #154 in the 1980's.

Maryland Midland UBHF (Union Bridge-Highfield) rolls westbound after switching NVR Homes factory in Thurmont,MD. The rebuilt GP38 and 2 rebuilt SD40s will use all of their 8,000 HP to lift about 3 dozen freight cars up the 1.93% ruling grade up to Blue Ridge Summit. This train will return in 3 hours eastbound in an intense thunderstorm.

I've been back after the D&I this week, piling up more shots in my inventory.  A bit of trivia first.  
D&I Railroad runs through (South) Dakota and Iowa, but the official name goes only by the initials.  The reason is a sort of deference to the state of South Dakota, which actually owns the tracks from Canton and Elk Point, SD, after dipping into Iowa twice.

3. The white boxes are bee hives.  I didn't get too close.  Bees are a major source of income on the Northern Plains, not only for the honey but also as pollinators.

4. Elevator at Hudson, SD.  Trains no longer load here as most of the corn gets used at the ethanol plant a mile south.
