Well, my two week stint at the fire in South Dakota turned into only 3 days.  On day 2, the Southwest corner of SD was clobbered by rainstorms, so I was sent home.

I don't have many photos of my hometown railroad, the Delaware-Lackawanna in action, but here is a series of images taken on April 17, as a grain train came into Scranton from Pocono Summit, PA.

The two units leading the train past the former DL&W passenger station are Alco C425 (originally Erie Lackawanna) and Alco C630, still in General Electric colors.

The train is heading downhill on the "China Wall" separating the downtown from South Scranton. The concrete Mattes St. tower, restored by the National Park Service, is trackside on the far right.

Keystone Propane is a customer on the route in Tobyhanna, PA, and propane tank cars are often mixed in with the grain cars.  The purple car on the far right is unusual. Near the top of the photo is track repair equipment, fixing up the Canadian Pacific rails.  This was also DL&W at one time.

All this can be seen outside my attic window.

What photos have you captured lately that you want to share? All types of trains, stations, and other railroad elements are welcome on the Midweek thread.  Enjoy yourselves, and keep cool this summer.

I've bought a couple of new cameras and had the itch to try them out.  They came late on Saturday, and it took me awhile to find an online instruction manual and then some time to figure them out.  I loaded up a 120 roll of HP5 film and headed out just as darkness was falling.  Not wanting to get too far from home, I followed the BNSF tracks down into Iowa.  By then, it was night.  Hmmm.  I set up some flash at a country crossing, made a few calculations, set up the camera, and waited.  BNSF n/b came and I popped it. I packed my stuff away and headed towards town, and heard on the radio that the D&I was running a rare night train.  Hmmm.  I raced it to Baltic, SD and set up the flash and camera.  Train came; I popped it.

I've taken hundreds of flash photos of trains by now, but these were something truly different for me.  My new camera is a Rolleiflex  MX-EVS 6x6 made in 1951.  For flash I was using M2 flash bulbs.  These were my first attempts using flash bulbs and a film camera, and I think I nailed them!  It wasn't as hard as I feared.  Now, to scale things up and get more practice.  Old school is cool!  BTW, RR photographer David Plowden's favorite camera was a Rolleiflex of about the same vintage.  It was second only to the Speed Graphic as the camera of choice for professionals 1940--1960.
