Wednesday is here, and so is 🍂 Autumn. Trees are starting to change color in my neighborhood, and our dry Summer should make for a colorful Fall. DD294713-35D5-4C8A-A6B3-3E27345031F9
I took a drive out to Cleveland, OH last week. While my main goal was to Re-visit the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, (first time in 25 years) I also went to explore some of the railroad history. C43BF9E6-9DB9-4359-9D03-57749D8BB5EE

The Tower City Center was at one time the tallest building between New York and Chicago. It was the train station serving the Nickel Plate Road and the New York Central. Possibly other railroads. Amtrak stops a few blocks away, near the Browns football stadium, and the R&R Hall of Fame.

It was a thriving place when I visited here in 1995, taking the RTA train into the station. However, times have changed, and shopping is no longer the recreation it once was. Still, it is a beautiful structure. 58A0BFBF-54FD-411B-AF41-1423984AF33A

Also, a related business is the labor unions. The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers once owned the Standard Building, about 2 blocks from Tower City. It was still the union office when I was here in 1995, but was sold in 2014. It is being redeveloped into apartments, or possibly a hotel. I’m not sure if hotels are a hot property idea these days.

Another unusual rail-related business I discovered is the former WS Gilkey Company, printers of blank railroad forms. Not only did railroads hire so many people in the early 1900s, but they also kept a lot of side businesses going. C75BDF08-5102-4BBD-9339-2FEDCB88B9C0

I did take photos of trains while I was in town. The freights come rather frequently, and this lift bridge spends a lot of time going up and down. It is now the Norfolk Southern, and is the same line Amtrak uses for the Lake Shore Limiteds. This span crosses the Cuyahoga River, which still sees a bit of barge traffic.

I spent about a half hour outside Margaritaville, in the East Flats district waiting for the RTA light rail train to pass. The pattern I noticed, is that when one train pulls in to the stop, it isn’t long before another train comes by in the opposite direction. 1B4E5933-9DC1-42F9-80F4-3CD3799B53AA

The elevated rail line adds a bit of drama to the ride, and for photos.

Thus final photo is the same train as above, only rolling away from me. The Sun was rather dim due to the smoke traveling East from the forest fires in the Western states. Still, it was a great time to be outside, and revisit familiar places.

Where have you been lately? If you had a train trip, or just stopped by your local railroad yard for a few minutes, please post your pics here.

5 Conductor checks couplers

The conductor exits the loco from the cab front to direct a coupling to a container train.

5 Pain of CN Locos

A pair of CN locomotives pass over the Eight Mile Road Viaduct.

7 CN Loco moving in yard

A container train northbound through the yard.

8 Pawn Shop

Across the street is the Motor City Pawn Brokers.  I have always found that there are a lot of interesting architecture adjacent to rail yards, like the back of buildings.

Hope you found these CN photos interesting and hope to see you out rail-fanning and posting your photos here.  Gary 🚂

As some of you may know, I have this thing for the D&H... so today, I trekked up to Honesdale, about 45 minutes north of me in Wayne County, PA. Apparently, Honesdale was on the D&H Canal, and, in fact, the Wayne County County Historical Society is located in the 1860 D&H Canal Company Office building (first picture). Unfortunately, it was closed today - have to try again on the weekend. There are tracks behind the building where the Stourbridge Line runs several excursions. I did get a couple of pics...

Stop the “Train” - Tonight myself & my wife went out for dinner at the West Acres, Michigan - Summer Food Truck Festival at our Community Park. Every other Wednesday we have a different food truck. Train stuff is everywhere.

On the window of this food truck they had a B&W Photo from 1922. This photo shows a street car going by their brick and mortar building in downtown Royal Oak, Michigan.

Little Brothers Diner has been in the same location since 1922. On 4th Street next to the railroad tracks.

The Little Brothers Hamburger Diner is now open.

Next to the order window they proudly display a photo from 1922 showing a street car going by their Hamburger Stand.

3 Food Truck

Train Room Gary is waiting for three burgers and a small fry. I just added a rail-fanning trip to Royal Oak, Michigan and a stop at Little Brothers Diner, next to the railroad tracks.

Train Room Gary: How were the burgers?

My late best buddy (RIP) and I used to pig out* on tiny Krystal burgers after a hard day of railfanning the greater Tampa Bay area of Florida back when I took my annual vacation from Germany's Deutsche Bundesbahn.  I loved to fly US Air Frankfurt-Pittsburgh-Tampa in those wonderful by gone days of the 80s.  Great on board service!

* We always ordered a dozen each!  A fantastic midnight lunch even if I do say so myself?

The diner looks perfect for a 1:1 scale back yard railroad providing you live out in the country and have plenty of land to play train on!

Man, you have all the cool stuff on your side of the state. We did discover Casey's BBQ near Kalamazoo. Great food.
