Good morning, boys and girls, and welcome once again to Midweek Photos!   Here is the place where we could share our photos of the real world of railroading, whether a flawless excursion, a freight derailment, track repair, or rail remnants we have encountered.  Look through your files to find what you can add...

It was sunny in Scranton, PA last Friday, when I caught some of these pieces which had arrived for RailFest.  Norfolk Southern offered this MP15E switcher.  An SD40 and their Exhibit Car would show up soon enough.  The Delaware-Lackawanna Caboose, DL&W diner 470 and other pieces were caught on this track.  Throughout the day, pieces would be placed for display.

Central of New Jersey RS3 1554 shoved the diner off to the side.  It and sister diner 469 will get truck and brake work in the Steamtown locomotive shop after RailFest.

Late in the day, F3 664, Lehigh Valley C420 414 and D-L C420 405 were posed next to Big Boy 4012.

The Delaware-Lackawanna was all over RailFest this year.  This unexpected surprise greeted me Saturday morning.  RS11 1804 lettered for the Western NY based Depew Lancaster & Western RR perfectly posed on the lower South Washington Ave bridge.

The MP15E was decorated with bunting for the event.  The chairs are for guests of the opening ceremonies.

The other F3 in the set, number 663 is getting a generator rebuild.  If all goes well, she will be mated again with 664 for some October excursions.

After hours, the Erie Lackawanna Dining Car Preservation Society hosted a dinner in their diner on the Diamond branch.

That's about it for me.  I hope you had some success in catching a train or two to add to this grouping.  Have a great day.

Ghosts from the past...  In a previous life around 1991-ish, I was heading down Rt 30 in northern Indiana to Fort Wayne to do a service call.  I didn't usually take my camera with on calls.

En route, I encountered this Amtrak train heading west. With the morning sun still relatively low and the haze not burned off, I pulled over for a couple of quick grab shots:

Amtrak Indiana 1991-ish 01

Amtrak Indiana 1991-ish 02

Amtrak Indiana 1991-ish 03

But, this happened to be no ordinary Amtrak train.  It carried a section of the American-Orient Express tour train:

Amtrak Indiana 1991-ish 04

Amtrak Indiana 1991-ish 05

Don't know what possessed me to grab my camera before heading out on this day (I don't remember the date,) but I was glad I did.

Out on a sunny Spring Saturday afternoon doing some rail fanning near Perryville, Md. when we noticed an unusual dip in the rails.

The ballast had eroded away from some recent rain.  So my friend, who is a Philly police officer called the emergency number listed on the crossing signal.  About 20 minutes later, a CSX maintenance pickup truck arrives to survey the damage.  "Ahh, that's no big deal!" and he drives away.  At that point we decided to step back quite aways in case of a disaster.

Another 20 minutes later, the cavalry arrived!!

Excellent job of photo journalism.  It was great you got to witness the whole story!

Rusty traque, that Amtrak train was actually the American European Express, an earlier version of the AOE. IIRC, this took the same route as the Cardinal, but ran on alternate days. The costs involved with a bad derailment put this operation out of business. A couple years later, other financiers brought this train back as the American Orient Express.

Eighteen responses?  That might be a record for this year!  I'll add one more.  These are a few more of my Canadian VIA photos.

Wow, you are really high up there.  The train looks like a micro Z scale train from that vantage point!!

Those pictures were taken from an overlook on the side of a cliff on a county road that runs from near Kremmling to State Bridge, CO. I am guessing that the overlook is about 1000ft above the river. The canyon is 2000ft deep at the deepest point.

Jerry, Thank you for the reference points.  I know of places in West Virginia where I have been about 1000 and 2000 feet above a valley.  Thanks.
