It's a new month, and Back to School / Back to Work time. For a last hurrah of summer, Steamtown National Historic Site held its RailFest this past Saturday and Sunday.  In preparation for the event, Groveton Papers no. 7 took a shower to look ready for the show on Thursday.

The noses know!  Visiting locomotives from Canadian Pacific and Norfolk Southern face the turntable along with Illinois Central 2-8-0 790 and New Haven Trap Rock 0-4-0T 43.

Amtrak looked like a treehouse, taking up residence in the parking lot area.

Such a long train of long cars practically took the entire length of track.

The featured item this year was this Viewliner sleeper that was converted into a diner.  Very sharp and modern looking.

Since many of my locomotive shop photos were blurry, I had to look again before posting. Here is some of what people saw.  Walter demonstrating the turret lathe for cutting the interior of a tire which is used in preparing a tire to sweat onto a wheel.

DSC_2271

The sweating process involves setting a fire ring around the tire so it can be removed.  The same process is used to add a replacement tire.

Now to the wheel lathe for demonstrating the cutting process.

The green blocks next to the wheels have the cutting bits that trim the tread and the flanges of the wheels.

Then over to the wheel press.

For adding wheels to the axles and taking them off.  This machine was recently restored.

The excursions featured a photo runby at Moscow's station.

and away they go!

Here she is leaving the turntable to begin rallying her consist for the return to NS-land.

Then it was time for the CP and R&N units to sit on the turntable before heading outbound to their respective roads.

Time for your photos to add to the thread!  Enjoy the last few official weeks of summer.  Fall is on its way and plenty of colorful photo ops.

Once again this summer, I have some steam photos!  Over the weekend I drove up to Fargo ND and took a left to Rollag, MN.  One of the biggest steam threshing shows in the country is there.  They had something like 80 steam tractors running!  And the resident 0-6-0 steam train that runs on a loop around the grounds giving rides.  First shot is of the engine running (barely!) up their biggest hill.  Second shot is of the engine put away in the machine shop for the night.  (I did some fast talking to get in there!)  Third shot is of their little 4-4-0 for the kids.  Final shot is what I came for--the famous Rollag spark show!  They had two this year, one with the three big steam shovels and a second with some of the steam tractors.  It was well worth the 4 hour drive up there and having to camp in the parking lot two nights!  Can't get enough of those steam tractors!  This year I took videos too, with my Nikon D5100.
