One of my favorite books as a kid was Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel. The steam shovel was saved by becoming a stationary steam plant in the basement of a building which despite my parents thinking this was a happy ending, I didnt think so. So heres a PRR Mikado being converted to stationary steam service. I remember some engines were saved by being used this way. Anyone recall which ones?

Lots of steam engines were used for stationary boiler service. N&W 1218 was used for this at a Union Carbide plant when it was donated to Steamtown.

I never thought the ending to that book was a happy one, either!

I haven't seen an article that lists the  locomotives that later served as stationary boilers, but I think it was fairly common around the world, if the locomotive wasn't immediately scrapped, donated, or allowed to rust away on a weed infested siding someplace. I do know that you see it being mentioned occasionally if you're reading an article on a particular locomotive or class of locomotives.
