Just came up on E-bay. Very rare set of black GE EF-3 Electric locomotives. A-B-C set. Never run. No, these are not mine. They seldom are available and I have a set but would love to see one of our Milwaukee brothers or sisters get this set. Check them out. Don

This is my two unit set. It started life as a Virginian set. I got it at a blow-out price from Just Trains and redid it to Milwaukee. I have the original tri-color three unit set also. I love the look. They look like they could handle anything. I'm going to use the black set as helpers in the mountains on my new layout. Don

For those of you who are interested in a set of electrics like the ones you are looking at but with proto 3.0, I suggest you call MTH tomorrow and speak with Rich Foster. Rich, may be able to provide you with some kind of a timetable. If he tells you, it won't be for awhile, then you will have to decide if you should get these.

For you guys that already own the MTH box cab sets: The sound engineer at MTH had developed a new sound file for the box cabs.  If you have computer located somewhere near your  tracks, this newer and much more correct sound can be entered into your present engine.  Just contact MTH and ask for Roy and I believe he can help you out.

Just a word of caution, however:  Our first intention was to duplicate the gear sounds of the prototype engines, rather than the more generic "rushing air" sound that came with the engine.  We first tried to use an actual recording of the original box cabs, but the last time those were recorded would have been in the early 1970's, before digital recordings were available.  The sound had a lot of static in it that would have been objectionable.  So a more modern recording of a straight-cut spur gear rapid transit car was taken but slowed up about one octive.  Sounded perfect!  Heavy duty, gear noise that increases in pitch as the engine accelerates.

But my box cab set was black, representing the appearance of the units before about 1951  or 1952.  MTH was using a single note air horn as a warning whistle.  We also changed that sound to a "screech" of a single chime air whistle.  This is, I believe, correct for the early box cabs, before they were painted with the orange and maroon stripes.  This sound should also be available from MTH, now.

Really improved the pleasure of running these big beauties!

Southwest Hiawatha, this was very close to the original price. It was the most I ever payed for a engine when I bought my try-color 3 unit set. The ones on the bay have never been run so I don't think that's a bad price if you want one.

Breezinup, Does this mean you don't like electrics? I know, I have a friend that thinks I'm nuts because I like electric. Don

As long as we are talking about Milwaukee Road electrics on eBay, here's a Weaver Little Joe at an opener of $500. Closes in a couple of days. Cab number is E20,  correct for the Weaver unit, which is detailed as a passenger motor. At that price I'd consider bidding on it myself, but I already have one and the budget's a bit tight at the moment.

Scale Rail, I couldn't decide when the boxcabs came out which to get, so I lost all self-control and bought both sets, with the fourth unit for each. As you say, the most I've ever spent on a locomotive, but worth it. They will pull a ton and they do attract a lot of attention at the museum.

No, no problem with electrics. I do like the tricolor version, and have several EP-5s. I just find these black shoeboxes a bit dull, and much too expensive. Just me, of course. I suppose it's hard for me to see that kind of value in those right now when I stare at the new Legacy Blue Comet I just got which cost $325 less.
