Hello all

Here is the Mini-Scale Hudson and Passenger cars ...all die-cast ( yes heavy)...17/64ths scale ...came out 6 + months before the Lionel 700E..and was $5.00 cheaper.

Originally planned to be the Mi-Loco die-cast line ...but Lee B Green could not pay off Congress Tool and Dies...$20,000 for dies and molds  ( forget those crazy $$$ Lionel quoted for the 700E) .... $20,000 got you Hudson, Tender, 2 passenger cars and 3 freights ........

check out link for action packed video ..yes the Tucson cars passed in video are also Mini-Scale  ......4 cars and express reefer is about the limit for the Hudson to pull  as stock built .

In my humble opinion ..the Mini-Scale line represents one of the best offerings in vintage O scale .... before climbing the ladder to the custom  builders .

I like the passenger cars so much I was contemplating silicon moulds, and resin replica cars. They wouldn't be doorsteps, but they would be great for kit bashing and adding to the 17/64  scale fleet. I have a Mini- Scale Hudson that got damaged, and someone converted it too, inside three rail, and with some work on the lath its back in gauge and on its way for other repairs. It all takes time.  What happened to the tooling for these??    cTr....( Choose the Right )

First off, I'm not gonna say "awesome" (again), but that's what it is.

When you post these vids, I'm always torn between watching the subject and scanning the shelves above, behind and below, looking at what must be one of the most complete collections of vintage stuff anywhere. I may have mentioned this before, but I wonder if sometime you might consider doing a video that shows an overview of (at least some) of your tremendous collection. I also appreciate your not adding unnecessary music to your videos: the sound of the trains themselves is music enough.

Thank you.

I just received a flyer in the mail for an online auction by "Harris Toy Train Auctions" on September 10, 2022 and it features a Min-I-Scale Hudson said to have been owned by the grandson of the original owner of Congress Tool and Die Co.  And said to be in the box and never run.  (I'm not affiliated with this auction house in any way.)  Scan of flyer below.

Carey - I just watched your video above, and then some more.  I know what I will be doing for the next few days.    Thanks for posting them!

Wow!  You know the old saying about the most toys.  I give, you WIN!!!

I have a few questions, hoping you can help.

You mention a manual reverser, so the Outside 3R must be AC correct?

Now the questions I am afraid to ask, because I can already feel my wallet getting lighter.

Were there manufactures that made SCALE (proportion) Diecast Heavyweight Passenger Cars in 1:48.

Are they "relatively" available if you know where to look?  Where might that be?

Thank you!

Hello all

Rod it was very expensive the first time around ......time will tell if gravity still works

Diecast 1/4" ....not that I know of ...

Alexander made a line of cast aluminum passenger cars in 1/4" ...

The Alexander cars are also rather thin on the ground these days ..

Crovan made a line of stamped aluminum passenger cars  1/4" with operating Vestibules !...some of my favorites... unfortunately they were expensive at the time and hard to find now .....

Lobaugh made some nice 1/4" passenger  cars ... but also few and far between ..

Tons of Walther's available...

This is early used universal motors AC/ DC ....I run DC ...manual reverse works just fine .

Cheers Carey

Carey - Thank you  very much for the information.  I will do some looking on the internet to see what the different cars you mentioned look like.  The Alexander cast aluminum in particular have my interest.  When I think of Walthers, I think of primarily a wood car, with Cast ends and details.

I have been buying "late model" Scale items since coming from HO to O last year.

I like metal cars.  I do have some Athearn Metal Freight cars kits, both HO and now O, but again they rely on a wood structure.  I always liked extruded aluminum Streamline cars and when in HO had some Kasiner / OK Cars.  I had been aware of K-Line Streamline cars since they came out, so that was easy.  I have bought a set of K-Line Heavyweights, but wish they cast instead of Plastic.  It could be done.  I always have liked how MDC transitioned from Die Cast to Plastic (Roundhouse).  Could always go the other way.  I am thinking Lionel acquired those molds.

I just checked the Harris Toy Train Auctions site to see what the Min-I-Scale Hudson sold for in the September 10, 2022 auction.  It did not appear for that date's auction results.  One can only speculate why.  Perhaps it was sold in a side deal, owner pulled it from the auction, clerical error, who knows.

I looked it up also.  If this is the same one, it sold for $4600.

Yes.  That's it.  It either wasn't there or I missed it when I searched a couple of days ago.  I searched through all 14 pages of search results - twice.  Once looking generally at the images.  And once reading the titles.  I now see it on page 6 of the results.  I also did a general search for "Hudson", and it didn't turn up there either, but I see it today with that search.  I'm not sure how I could have missed it at both places.  I suppose it is possible that something was delaying "closing the deal" and it got posted between when I searched and when you searched, but that would be quite a coincidence.  Anyway, thanks for checking.  We now know it sold for $4,600.

hello all ...do not put too much faith in the crazy prices on this Mini Scale Hudson at auction ....yes sold at Stouts for 8500   then at Harris for 4,600 ..same engine ...not good ROR.

much more realistic..yesterday on Ebay one sold for just over 400 ....nuff said  ...  one was at York for 1K ..no one looked at it ..

the Mini Scale engines are wonderful and great ..but you can find them at reasonable prices if you look ...    if large masses start collecting vintage O scale prices could rise ...till then enjoy the bargains.

Do you have an exact title or item number for the one that sold on eBay yesterday?  I've searched six ways from Sunday and can't find it.

Also, the price of a collectible can vary massively based on condition.  That's why you really just can't make a straight across comparison for the "same" engine.  Even just the lack of the original box can easily cut the value of something in half.

Here is the mini scale labeled Lionel "like" ...

Thanks.  No wonder I couldn't find it with a title like that.  It does seem to be a Min-I-Scale.  I wonder if it had been properly identified, if it might have gone for much more.  Sometimes with poorly identified or misidentified items, somebody scoops it up for a song   There were only 3 bids from just 2 bidders and the starting price was $399.  I suspect it might have flown under the radar of many.  Sometimes such a buyer flips it and markets it correctly.  We'll see if this same engine suddenly appears on eBay with a proper title.

I realize that this is an old thread, recently resurrected.

It's fascinating, continuing to learn about O-scale Hudsons, and those in other scales, too.

If the OP is still around, or if the Admins wish to do so, can we correct the original title to say "17/64ths" instead of "17/6ths" ?  It will make it easier in the future to search for this important information.
