Just wanted to share an order from Minuteman scale models I just received. As most of you probably know Minuteman bought “Scalecoat” paint from Weaver when Weaver went out. Just wanted to say I had a good experience with ordering and fast shipping to get on with my project. The paint color and quality is the same I remember from back when Weaver owned the brand. I even got a $5 coupon code for my next purchase! You might want to check them out next time you need paint.

Thanks for the heads up Chris this is good information.
Do you know by any chance how Weaver handled decals (or dry transfers) for customer runs?
The reason I ask is that I have a set of 3rd rail HW coaches that were sent to Weaver for customer painting. This was done through JD trains (now out of business). I have picked up a few more coaches that need to be repainted and re-lettered and I would like to use the same or as close as possible, the materials that Weaver used. It looks like the paint is an easy one, but what decals/dry transfers did they use?
Thanks Chris.

Charlie, If Weaver did the painting and your road name was one they had already done for their cars I suspect your cars would have been pad printed.
As for Minuteman, they have been at the Big E for the past two years with all of their products including Scalecoat paint.

Hi Charlie. I really don’t have an answer to your question but it wouldn’t hurt to give them a call. I spoke with the owner about another paint I was looking for and he was very helpful. Maybe he can help you. I don’t recall his name.
FWIW... Scalecoat paints continue to be available through Walthers and the dealers they serve. Whereas they were originally sourced from Weaver, they are now sourced from Minuteman.
BTW...Their paint stripper/remover for plastics is especially popular among a range of hobbyists frequenting our store.

I have used Scalecoat paints for years! (Especially Scalecoat II for plastic). I did not have to use a barrier coat on plastic. I was a BN modeler for years. I tried Floquil "Cascade Green" and did not like the green shade. Also, I did not like having to spray the paint then a gloss coat so I could decal then a coat of flat. Scalecoat has never been easy to find in and around Sioux City or Omaha. I ordered from the new owners but the postage almost exceeded the paint cost (hazardous shipment), but got the colors I needed. I have tried the new acrylics but don't like them. I have used all sorts of thinners to spray Scalecoat with no problems.

Thanks everyone, good information.
Just to add more information, this was a 10 set custom run of Chicago & Northwestern coaches made by 3rd rail that Jeff from JD's trains had made for the store. I say a run of ten sets because that is what Jeff told me, I have no other proof beyond that. Because of that information, I never thought that pad printing would have been used, just off the shelf decals.
Regardless, I will explorer the ideas you guys presented.
Many thanks.
