It is with great sadness that I pass along this information about Charles Griffin, builder and owner of the famous Misty Mountain Railroad in Blairsville, GA. This information came today via email from Charles' good friend, Jim Steed, also of Blairsville.
Charles passed away today, Sunday, at 12:15 pm peacefully in his apartment. He would have been 85 March of this year. There will be a short closure gathering for Charles on Monday in his apartment. A Hospice Chaplain will conduct a short service. Jim Steed has been asked to say a few words on behalf of Charles. Only close family, grandsons, and a few friends will be in attendance. Charles will be cremated and buried beside his son Ken in The House of Prayer cemetery here in Blairsville.
With the passing of Charles Griffin we have lost a wonderful steward of this hobby. He shared his Misty Mountain Railroad with thousands of people, even though it was above his garage and not actually built as a public display layout. He took donations from the people who came to see the layout, and every dime was donated to local charities.
I am so glad that we were able to produce the HD video on the Misty Mountain Railroad last year. When you watch that video, you will remember Charles as a kind, gentle and articulate man, which is as it should be.
Until we meet again, my friend...
