I came across this photo this morning….something I don't believe I've ever seen before.  (Where I'm located,  it's not easy for me to see Norfolk Southern or BNSF UP Heritage units, let alone see one (or more) of them from each railroad working together.)  You guys in the Midwest or wherever, do you see this a lot?  I found it very interesting, not to mention quite colorful!

Another question, anyone do this on their own layout?

Hot Water,

Mike might be referring to the BN SD-60's in the consist(looks like original paint scheme for those engines).

Mike, the blue unit is a Union Pacific MoPac Heritage Unit.

The consist does look cool!

As for running this way, no. I do not have any modern diesel's as such. (My wife and I prefer the steam engines! But, I did get the MTH Premier Western Maryland Alco FA-2 set for Christmas. She agreed to tolerate my love of first generation Alco's! )

The photo was taken just west of Ludlow, CA on the BNSF Transcon Route (former Santa Fe main line). That is probably one of those NS "run thru" trains to LA, and is definitely a BNSF train.

I know it is a BNSF train that is the lead engine.  I just could not tell where the picture was taken and was trying to point out to the op that in the Tehachapi you see mixed trains all the time.

Just because there is a BNSF unit in the lead position, doesn't necessarily indicate that it is a "BNSF train". I live on the BNSF former CB&Q main line out of chicago, and see a number of NS units leading westbound freight trains, on the BNSF!

Can you judge a train by it's lead locomotive?

If so, one would think that Western Springs, Illinois was on Norfolk Southern's route map:

We live near 2 BNSF main lines in the Midwest (Kansas City area). I have seen BNSF & UP power consists and BNSF & Norfolk Southern power consists on the BNSF main lines. Can't remember seeing all 3 in one consist, nor have I seen any of the heritage units. Have also seen UP only and NS only consists on the BNSF main lines. UP has tracks in this area also.

Not sure where the NS tracks are or if they just have trackage rights with BNSF and/or UP in this area? I think BNSF does some intermodal hand offs to NS in this area, UP may also. BNSF and UP both have intermodal yards in this area.
