Modern Lionel transformer advice

No you won't need a modern transformer to run these locos. However their electronics can be quite sensitive. If you don't have a circuit break between your old transformer and the track you should consider adding one. If you want to use the hron and bell in some new locos you'll need a controller for that as well.

Just to add to the above advice, its likely your 1993 era diesels had AC "Pullmor" motors in them, so your transformer should operate them without issue. The "B" unit with Railsounds II should have an included Lionel Railsounds "button box" to operate the horn/bell functions.

Agree with adding a fast-blow fuse or circuit breaker between the transformer and track connection.

A circuit breaker won't hack it, since its main purpose is to protect the wiring and the transformer.  In order to protect the sensitive electronics in modern locomotives you need to use a TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor).  Use the forum search function to search TVS and all will be revealed.

Be sure to get the proper type of TVS unit, 32 volt & bi-directional. I got my TVS units from Mouser Electronics, however there are other electronic stores that might have a slightly better price.

Thanks everyone.  That's good news the Pullmor motors are AC.  I was fearing they would be DC.  If and when I proceed, I'll be sure to get the correct type of TVS unit.  In fact, it probably wouldn't hurt to have one now!  I'll start researching.
