I probably won't find any new or working used Flapper type smoke stacks. But I took the engine apart to see if I could improve the smoking becausethe middle stack didn't smoke at all after the first day or so. And this is what I found...
Not sure why this happened other than the previous owner had it apart. Maybe pinched the wire going to the second smoke unit or the fact that it rests on a shield and there is no shield on the smoke unit itself like the other two. It looks like the "mot-" wire got the worst of it. All of the fans have run as required but only the middle unit was not smoking. It did get warm on the stack though. I'm thinking the melting was not keeping it from sometimes running the fan at some speed but the "mot-" wire, second unit, was separated in the harness, see the second picture above, when I moved the wires. The unit had a mess inside the batting and resistor. It was the worst of them. Maybe the fan was not quite up to keeping the heat out of the unit.
So it looks like none of the smoke unit wiring is available. I will have to rebuild them or possibly find other 4 wire harnesses in Lionel Parts for other engines.
Anyone have any pointers to four wire harnesses in this size? And 12 wire harnesses? The 12 pin connector also got so hot that the keeper on the "mot-" wire socket snapped off when I tried to remove the socket which had the burned up wire. So that's a pickle if there are no harnesses.
Rats...
