Hi All,

I have some MTH E units that I upgraded to ERR.  Once I was done, I found an issue - the engine would be running, but if one truck had any bump, the motor would stop even though you could still hear it running.  So I got a broken MTH Dash-8 from the same era thinking I could just swap motors, only to find out the worm gear is a different length.

So to my subject, is there a way to be able to remove the worm gears without damaging the motor?  I need to take the long one off the bad motor and put it on the good motor.  I was thinking I would have to heat up the gear so I could remove it, but I wanted to check with y'all first before I break anything.

Here is a picture of the two motors:

Thanks in advance.

Rob,

I'm actually trying to fix the engine that uses the longer gear, so I need to "extend" the great on the smaller motor to be the same length as the bigger one.  I want to pull the long gear of the bad motor and put it in the good motor that has the small gear, but I'm not sure how to pull the gear off the shaft.

Good luck.  There's been a couple threads about different tools, pullers, etc.  I don't think you're going to get it off without one.  I tried to do exactly this last week, and I heated up the worm to probably 400 degrees, and had it clamped in some cloth.  Significant hammer blows to a punch on the end of the shaft inside the worm did nothing but wreck my punch.

Ended up tossing the motor and worm.  Going to buy one from MTH website

Yeah, that is what I was afraid of. I did check the shorter gear motor in the e-unit and it barely caught the truck gear, so I think another option I'll try before ruining tools getting the gear off is to grind the collar to be thinner. I think just adding one or two more gear mesh connections will work. If not, it will be time for heat and tools...

Thanks for all the replies.

I’d agree with John, grinding the motor mount is a bad idea,…complete motors are available from mthpartsandsales.com if you’d prefer to go that route……..it’s very tough to try & save a motor attempting to remove the gear. I don’t and can’t guarantee success every time I do them…..it’s usually 50/50 if the gear is gonna wreck coming off,….those gears are on there with same force that can crush submarines like soda cans….😉
