Hey Guys,

Here is a hard one.  :-)

I have an older version (1990s?) of the Lionel Rail Sounds car, diesel mode.  It is 1/48 scale or really close.  But, it is incredibly loud, and tends to drown out all of my other layout sounds.

I have removed the shell,  and am thinking about just taking the entire sound unit off, which would leave me with a large boxcar, whose doors open on both sides.

The unit, though, still has double rollers underneath, and I assume a hot and neutral wire coming up into the frame.

Initially, I was thinking about mounting a flashing red light bulb inside of the car.  But, that would be pretty boring, considering all of the other red lights I have on the layout.  (I have often wondered why in the world nobody makes a flashing yellow or green light bulb for O Gauge layouts.)

Now I have started to wonder if there is some more interesting small accessory I could mount inside, which would be eye catching and could be viewed through the open doors. It would have to run off of the regular track power amps/volt/etc., because I don't want to fool with special resisters or other electrical components.

(Perhaps I could squeeze a small hobo fire scene inside?)

Anybody have any other ideas?

Thanks for all replies.

@Mannyrock ,

I ordered the following from Evans Design;

Fire LED Kit × 3  Size: Nano (+$3.00) / Voltage: 7-19 volts AC/DC/DCC (+$2.00) / Wire Length: 8 Inch Wire

These attach directly to the hot/ground wires from the collector/truck, no need for additional electronics.  I ordered the nano, a little bigger than the pico, but still pretty small.  I attached 2 to make my little fire inside the barrel, but 1 may be sufficient.  I got the pico size first, and with my banana fingers I think I fried them.  I bought 3 nanos in order to have a spare in case of another oops.  Since I only installed one roller due to the difficulty in the installation, I added one of GRJ's LED lighting kits (from Hennings) so as there's not too much on/off flicker, and it works well.  Since you have 2 rollers, you should connect both to the LEDs and you would be fine.

@VADarthDad,

I actually bought the Woody Guthrie hobo song 'Hard Traveling' from iTunes to put on a player to go inside my hobo car.  Putting the collector/ground on the truck took so much effort I lost interest in doing that.  I may still revive that project at some point.
