Announcing The Next Custom Runs from Lionel for MrMuffin'sTrains

Note: We had folks request the Low Hood Monon version and this additional D&H version to run with the cataloged D&H schemes. We also had a request for the LV yellow jacket version originally modeled by Lionel in 2004 - but this time with a black roof. These three models have been added!

Our friends at Lionel are manufacturing three custom runs for MrMuffin'sTrains as extensions of the products offered in the 2019 Volume 1 Signature Catalog:

  • Lionel Legacy EMD GP-35 in Nickel Plate Road #910
  • Lionel Legacy ALCo C-420 High Hood Diesels in Monon #501 and #502
  • Lionel Legacy ALCo C-420 Low Hood Diesel in Monon #503
  • Lionel Legacy ALCo C-420 Low Hood Diesel L&N #1330, formerly Monon #513
  • Lionel Legacy ALCo C-420 Low Hood Diesel D&H #413
  • Lionel Legacy ALCo C-420 Low Hood Diesel LV #415 - Yellow jacket with black roof

Read some additional details, below. Each run is limited to 25 pieces, and pre-orders must be received by March 8th to guarantee delivery and lock-in the pre-order discounted price.

Yes, Lionel has issued the more common ALCo C-420 with the lower nose earlier - this version will be the High-Hood Nose.

The Monon owned and operated 18 of the C-420's, Road Numbers 501 through 518. The first six were purchased in August, 1966. The first two were the High Hood Version, #501 and #502, with the balance being the Low Hood Version previously produced by Lionel (6-34745 and 46). Monon #501 and #502 have never been modeled by a leading manufacturer in O Gauge before.

These units will have all of the features of the just-announced Legacy C420's in the 2019V1 Catalog. Each diesel is offered at a preorder sales price of $449.99 - use the links below to pre-order - no deposit is due - just select preorder at checkout.

Here's the Monon version in the Low Hood - we decided to do #503 since that followed #502 and Lionel hadn't made that number yet.

Lionel - Legacy C-420 Low Hood Diesel Locomotive "Monon" #503 w/ Bluetooth - Custom Run for MrMuffin'sTrains - #505 is pictured.... love the silver trucks!

When the Monon merged with the L&N, the Monon C-420's were repainted and renumbered, #1318 through #1335. Here we are offering an additional ALCo C-420 in the post-merger paint - L&N #1330 was formerly Monon #513

The EMD GP35 NKP #910 was the last diesel ordered by NKP to replace two diesels that were destroyed when they derailed.  It was delivered in May, 1964, which is just four months before the NKP merged with Norfolk & Western.  It was then renumbered #2910.  It went on to serve Norfolk and Southern until it was retired in November, 1991.

This unit will have all of the features of the just-announced Legacy GP-35's in the 2019V1 Catalog. This diesel is offered at a preorder sales price of $449.99 - use the link below to pre-order - no deposit is due - just select preorder at checkout.

Well, after 24 hours, the preorders for the Monon #501 and #502 are really coming in, thanks, and quite a few of the L&N version.... last place is the NKP GP-35 and that surprises me - there were a lot of interest in this in my email but the preorders are falling behind.

If you'd like any of these, expected by year end, please preorder using the links above - no deposit is required.... Thank you....

Thanks for doing these, Steve!  I pre-ordered the blue D&H.

Would you consider adding one more?  If I'm not mistaken, Lionel hasn't offered a Legacy-version C420 in the Lehigh Valley's as-deliverd "Yellow Jacket" scheme (they did do one years ago with TMCC).  I'd be willing to order two of them if done with different road #'s!

Also...What was the final outcome of your proposed D&H and Lehigh Valley custom runs for the ALCo RS11 in the last Lionel catalog?  Did you reach the minimum order threshold for any of those engines?  Just curious as I placed pre-orders for 3 engines...two different D&H and one L.V.

Well, we weren't able to do the RS-11's... my fault - I didn't get it worked out with Lionel in time and missed the window... I was thinking about the LV Yellow Jacket myself... I have the first run.... do you know which road numbers were on that unit?.... email me if you have the time - mrmuffin@mrmuffinstrains.com

Anybody else want that LV? Please let me know....

Thanks for your reply, Steve.  Maybe next time on the custom-run RS-11's.

I sent you an email regarding the C-420 L.V. Yellow Jackets.

In support for more Lehigh Valley C-420s to be made (particularly more Yellow Jackets), I did some research this morning and compiled this list of what's been made to this date (I think I found everything) :

1) 18589, #409 (2001, V1)

2) 18592 #410 (Conventional), (2001, V1)

3) 28218 #407 (Yellow Jacket), (2004, V2)

4) 34748 #404 (2012, V2)

5) 34749 #412 (2012, V2)

6) 34750 #414 (non powered) (2012, V2)

The #414 still runs in her original paint scheme for the Delaware-Lackawanna RR in Scranton, Pa.  Former LV #405 also operates here but in a D-L corporate paint scheme.

The C420 class on the LV was numbered 404 through 415.  Only #s 412 and 413 retained the Yellow Jacket paint scheme from delivery until the start of Conrail in 1976, so #34749 is incorrect as I believe it is red.

   Mr Muffin, hope this helps.

Helps a lot - unless it makes you convulse, we are thinking #415 with the black roof.... I am trying to get up enough courage to do a second one with the grey roof.....

If anybody wants to preorder one - here's the link for #415.... I only have four orders right now - and I am one of them!

Steve,

I'm not convulsing just yet......  But none of the Lehgih Valley C420's had black roofs.  What appears to be a black roof in the picture you posted is just years of dirt, grime and soot that was never washed off.

Based on some research I've done, The Valley received these locomotives in late 1964 and repainted all but two of their C420's between 1973 and early 1975, as mentioned in a previous reply.  It appears the 415, ALCo serial# 3385-12, was one of the last to be repainted.  I've seen pictures from April 1975 where it looks like it literally just rolled out of the paint shop.

I also came across some info on www.anthraciterailroads.org and www.railfonts.com that lists the yellow as DuPont #5248 and the gray as DuPont #57704.  But there is no mention of what shade of silver was used on the trucks.

I hope this helps and I hope you get enough orders to make this happen.  And I sure would like to see these made with the prototypical gray roof.

Joe

Steve, I agree with Joe R.  None of the Valley’s C-420’s had black painted roofs.  I understand that to some folks a black roof might make the engine look better, but I would prefer it be the prototypical gray.  As you know, I’ve already placed a pre-order for one, and will gladly make it two if you do a second road #...but no black roof, please!

Come on all you Lehigh Valley fans out there, place a pre-order so Steve can make this proposed model a reality!!

The question isn't if other or all units had black roofs, the question is if Road Number 415 had a black roof at any point in it's Yellow Jacket history.  I know it's been mentioned that the roof looks black because of soot and road grime, but most pictures show a crisp sharp line between the black on the roof and the gray sides.  If it was soot, it would be more of a fade/transition between the black soot and the gray.  This site has lots of great photos of LV 415 if you care to click through them:

To try to help resolve the issue of the dark gray roof on #415, I pulled out my copy of Lehigh Valley RR Diesel Paint Schemes by Carl Steckler. This book lists at least 53 variations of paint schemes, lettering  or striping over all diesels used by the LV starting with the GE 1/2 tonners in 1922 through the through the PRR owned RS11s. The C420s  were all delivered the same, light gray on the cab and long hood. There are five variations listed as the C420s were repainted into Cornell red and these are a combination of striping and lettering.  The possibility is there that the paint wore down, was covered by soot, etc, or sustained some other issue.  One black and white picture in the book shows #414 with a darker roof braced by leader #411 in repainted red and different model engine behind it.

Well, here's the Lionel art work as of today for these special runs.... Thanks for all of the help with this - the pictures have been terrific.... I am going ahead with the black roof on #415 and a gray roof on #414... whether from soot, dirt or paint - it looks pretty dark.... I appreciate all of the pre-orders - hopefully - they will all sell through..... At this point, I don't have enough orders for the D&H #413 to move ahead....
