I am troubleshooting the lack of chuff on this MTH switcher for a friend. He said he put the teacher in upside down and then that started the problem.
So I took both the engine and coal shells off and checked continuity across the entire engine to coal car, all 10 colors. No issue. Also from wheel strobe sensor back.
Any ideas as to what else to check? Should I just buy a new board?
I also have a lack of chuff on a RK starter set blue comet with 5v boards, all other sounds work but the speed at low speeds stinks and without a lighted car, the whistle will blow. I believe the latter 2 issues are somehow related.
If speed control is lost, and a steamer doesn't smoke except neutral, the speed circuit has a fault. SO either the tach reader is bad, a wire issue, bad tach tape (can't be read) or the speed amp is bad. These are all fixable.
Putting in the tether upside down can cause real havoc, depending on the model and how the tether is wired.
Most likely fixable for less than board replacement. G
You have hit the money, GGG. What should I look for? the tact tape looks OK.
You can look at the tach reader through your cell phone camera to see if it has glow as one test with power applied. Also check continuity of the orange, blue and gray wires through the harness with the engine NOT powered. If it smoke in neutral gray is probably OK since it is common with tach reader. If they are all good, it is either bad reader or the board. I would guess tach reader. if the harness is ok. G
