If you're crazy like me and enjoy collecting all of a particular car type/series then this list might be for you.  It's a list of all the MTH 3-Dome Railking tank cars that I know about.   The car numbers are from the MTH web site.  I have not confirmed them with the actual cars.

One interesting item is the cost increase over the years.  From $32.95 in 1999 to $59.95 today.  That 1999 $32.95 would now be worth $48.30 given inflation so the cost has gone up faster than inflation but on the other hand the latest cars are more detailed and colorful than the earliest cars.

If you find it useful and find any errors or omissions I would appreciate it if you got back to me.

Enjoy

The only one I have is the Texaco. I counted approximately 17 tank car on the list with what appeared to be a privately owned name. Why are so many made with class I Railroad names?

Now I only buy brass two rail 3 and 2 dome tank cars. I convert them to three rail using Atlas trucks. The brass tank cars are highly detailed and always can be found lettered in prototypical correct private names.  You can always find undecorated models and paint / letter the cars yourself.

Thanks for taking the time to do the research and provide us with this detailed listing of MTH 3 dome tank cars.

Chris,

It is not sad at all. Going on the quest for that special car or group of cars is the part of this hobby that makes it so fun. I have been on a quest for an Atlas special run box car and an MTH premier single sheathed box  car for a couple of years now.

At October York 2016 I found the Lionel scale NYC stock car issued several years ago. It was on the first table I went to on the old Holiday Inn parking lot.  I had passed up the NYC stock car during a  couple of previous York meets because it was too expensive, and on another occasion the NYC stock car was on a table at the right price, but when I returned to buy it the NYC stock car had been sold.

Enjoy your  three dome tank car collection and have fun on the quest for the remaining cars.

Come to think of it, I remember some years ago, Lionel posted a new tank car in their catalog with markings for Merck & Co.  Since I spent my whole career there, I was naturally excited about the car (black with white lettering)  and wanted one.  Didn't happen, as the cotton-pickin' lawyers got into it and the car was never made.  %@*#!

Hoppy,

Everyone seems to think their trade marks are worth a trillion dollars, and by placing them on a model train they will some how be damaged our lose money.  I have always thought that trade marks on model trains are free PR for these big companies. I am also amazed when I see the little notes in the catalogs stating that the road name for a fallen flag railroads is used by permission of the railroad that bought the fallen flag so many years ago.

Chris Lord,

Thank you for providing as with that large list of MTH triple dome tank cars. I think what you are doing is a wonderful thing. Collecting three dome tank cars made by MTH is a great choice of cars. If you ever get the time, people on this forum would probably love to see pictures of your collection. I know I would. Take care and have a wonderful and safe weekend.
