Recently acquired my first, like new, Proto 3 engine #30-20802-1 B&O F3 ABA diesel on ebay. Seller said it ran fine except smoke didn't work well. Ok with me- -price was very reasonable. Arrived, original box and packaging, factory paperwork etc. -looks brand new cosmetically and no wheel wear or pickup wear.. Put on the track, charges ok, has startup sounds, horn bell, cab shatter but idles in neutral. Tried factory reset- 9 volts, horn button once then 5 bells, 1/2 second interval. .. probably 20 times - still won't reset to home. What am I missing? Any ideas? If I can't get it going -back to the seller for a full refund!

what is your track power? which transformer?
Hi - 1 each MTH Z4000 dual control handles with display, 1 ea . 100 watt MTH transformer with moving handle knob, horn, bell and direction buttons. I run conventional control- mix of postwar, williams, weaver, MTH.. Thanks for the response.
It needs reset to factory defaults. While it's not "supposed" to happen, if someone adds some MTH engines (again not all do this and it appears to be certain chain files or maybe something in the sound file) I've seen first hand an engine added to DCS disables conventional operation.
So, as a rule, before selling an engine (or buying an engine if you don't have DCS) have the seller reset the engine to factory defaults and ensure it runs in conventional BEFORE you get it.
Again, most likely, this is simply a setting in the engine that because the previous owner or dealer demonstrated in DCS- they failed to reset the engine and it happens to be that bug where conventional is disabled- even though it should not happen- here we are with it not working.
Print off this handy chart for specific sequences specific to PS3.
Again, you want to use the reset to factory defaults.

Again, we've seen this type of behavior before https://ogrforum.com/...c/182184738830899926
some engines are very picky about the timing and the voltage
You could test the track voltage to make sure you're getting what you think you are!
If you cannot get it to reset using a transformer, it may be easier/faster to take to someone with a DCS system, they add the engine and then reset it.

Grandpachoochoo is somewhat local to me, and has been in contact. He is just hoping to save a trip and time.
I've seen where the engine was running on my conventional test loop fine. Shut off, then the next day stuck in conventional. I had to do a DCS Factory reset, then a conventional reset to get the engine out of neutral. I had previously tried the conventional rest only which didn't fix the issue. Just FYI for those reading
Another time I just re-flashed and re-loaded sound file to get a engine back from the no-response state. Extreme, but it worked.
