I know absolutely nothing about MTH engines but I have a few. The 30-5118 is a Pennsylvania GG-1. Will this beast run with a conventional postwar ZW transformer? I can't seem to get it to run?

The owners' manual, page 45 lists the ZW as being a compatible transformer. Page 8 describes conventional operation.

That is a PS3 engine. You will need to give it a little while to charge the capacitors. Just turn the power on and wait until you hear the sounds come on. You should be able to control it then
