imageMany or all older Premier drawbars mysteriously have two holes at the end. The hole at the very end the tender pin fits to the tender pin.The mysterious second hole closer to the engine potentially would reduce the engine to tender gap. But I've been unable to use it due to the axle. Anyone know the purpose of the seemingly  unusable hole?

Yes, it is for closer and better-looking tender/loco coupling. You simply have to slip the drawbar up and over the axle as you inert the tender pin. (You must hold your tongue in the correct position to do this.)

This feature is one of the reasons that I do not like "wireless" (as with Lionel) or "not really wireless" (as with MTH) fitted and unadjustable (without cutting/re-assembling) drawbars. When locos had metal drawbars and wired tethers you could make the drawbar as short as your curves would allow. I used to add a hole to the factory bar or make my own - they can be just pieces of brass or aluminum or steel.

Better system. Plugging in a tether is not a hard job.
