MTH Buzzing Smoke Unit - Solution? | O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum

I am bringing some MTH Proto 2 steamers out of a few years hibernation. I have put in new batteries and all seems to operate well. The only issue is the smoke unit -- they do all smoke and puff however, there is a buzz/humm which I do not remember. While one solution is to turn the smoke unit off, does anyone have any experience with a humm from their smoke units and recommendations on possible solutions. Thanks !!!!

Does the buzz coincide with the fan operation on the smoke unit, i.e. buzz,buzz,buzz every time it chuffs. If this is the case, removing the shell, remove the top of the smoke unit, gently pull off fan impellar with needlenose. Apply a drop of oil to the fan motor shaft bushing at the base of the motor shaft then reassemble.

I had the same noise as NormanB .

The repair shop did that same thing for me .

good as new . My smoke unit was a proto 1 unit.
