I have an MTH Rail King C&O Hudson (30-1161-0) that is a horn-only model sold in 2000.

I had issues when I bought it throwing sparks etc. then shorting out.

The rollers have been cleaned (gummed up badly), and adjusted.   The unit has been checked for pinched or broken wires, or loose things causing fault tracking (none found).

Today, I am trying to run it (on a MRC Pure Power Dual) and found it ran properly forward, but pulled 6-8A, and the sound won't work.   In reserve, the horn works all the time and the unit draws 10A.    When I cut it back from reserve to neutral, it make a strange sound, then no sound at all.

Any experience or ideas about this issue???

Thanks!!!!!

Are there any rods binding? Can you turn the motor by hand through sever revolutions of the drive wheels and there are no spots where it is hard to turn?

Yep! that's good advice. I'd start by  turning the fly-wheel. Maybe even the turn the smoke unit off as well. Something's drawing excessive current.

Thanks for all your advice -- tried it.   The loco part of it runs like a Swiss watch (but need a new traction tire).   I had the top off, and the linkages, motor and other running gear runs very smoothly.  The issues appear to be something in the DCRU.   I suspect it is failing.   I think this would be a good candidate for PS2 conversion....
