Recently acquiring this Challenger I found the speaker to be very faint. Opening the tender the speaker is flaking stuff and I think I need a new speaker. I have asked MTH and another store but have not heard back yet. It is a 16Ohm 5 w speaker Star NR-05009-01  and 231E all printed on the speaker.

They just sent me an email of speaker buyouts that had that speaker.

I just went to the site now, and can't find it?

There it is. point to the deals tab and click the speaker buyouts.

Go to the page and pick mini speakers in the left headings. It was the third one over on top

2" 16 ohm speaker.

I can't post a direct link as they aren't a sponsor I believe?

don't power up the train anymore as the speaker can cause your amplifier in the train to fail, wait until you replace the speaker and make sure when you solder in the speaker you get the connections on the speaker do NOT TOUCH the ground as that will blow the amp and possibly the board especially being a ps2 5 volt board!

Alan!

I have an MTH 20-3089-1 Union Pacific Challenger with 5-Volt PS2 bought new in 2002 that I am preparing for one of my grandsons. It has been in a display case and has not been run until now.

I removed the MTH white battery and replaced it with a BCR. The engine runs properly in forward and reverse but I don't hear any chuffing. The horn and whistle sound volumes are very low and almost inaudible. I also tested it without the BCR but the symptoms are the same. Two wires are connected to the speaker and two to the volume potentiometer.  Solder joints look OK.

I've read this thread and it seems the speaker is the likely problem. The speaker in my tender is Star NR-05009-01

- 16 Ohms - 5 Watts - 231E - 50 mm diameter across the 4 mounting tabs. (see photos). MTH parts shows it out of stock. So - two questions:

1) Is the speaker the likely problem?

2) Where can I acquire a replacement and what brand should I buy?

Thanks for the help.
