Obviously with only those features, it was not a complete PS1 engine. You can inexpensively put a complete PS1 system into the shell or more expensively replace the guts with a PS2 conversion.
Here is a PS1 set of guts you can have for $50 shipped. Someone who knows what they are doing should do the work. This came out of a recent working conversion I performed.

Bano,
By the level of your question I can tell that your familiarization with the MTH systems is not solid enough to make me feel good about selling you these parts. Besides being familiar with 'the parts' you need some electronics knowledge and experience with these parts to get them back together in working order.
To answer your question, PS1 is basically a sound system and not a control system if you understand that difference. The electronics in the picture, along with instructions, give you capability of actual engine sounds, plus bell & horn, reverse action, coupler control and more. It is considered 'conventional' mode of operation.
PS1 has been replaced by PS2/3 which are full control systems.
All the best,
Hugh
This unit I have now has the bell, horn, and engine sounds no freight yard proto effects. It doesnt have reverse for some reason so I dont know if this is because its a salesman sample. It says protosound on the main chip. I am thinking if either getting a new F40 engine and switch the shells or see if there are other model locomotives like say a GP-38 and swapping the shells. My last option is have PS2 installed.
Bano, your just not having that much luck with that one, are ya?...sorry.
As Hugh stated, the early PS systems were nothing more than sounds...one got engine remote control when the PS2-3 came out.
Hugh, that system you've got is probably a diesel sound chip, right?

Are you sure the engine isn't just locked into forward??
You have a full PS-1 if you have engine sounds. You can down load a generic PS-1 instruction book from MTH. Probably pick your model engine.
You need to do a Reset 18 on the engine, and possibly attempt the unlock if the reset doesn't work.
That may also fix the FYS. Or at least show you how to activate them.
If that doesn't work, there could be a hardware fault on the bottom board preventing reverse sequencing. That is an easy fix once isolated.
The other option is an upgrade to PS-2. It is not a chassis issue as much as chosing a system to install for what you want. Smoke could be added too if it is not present. and the shell is set up for smoke. G
GGG, I downloaded the Manual to the F40. However the reset didnt work. As soon as I turn the transformer on she starts moving, when i stop the transformer and turn it back on she moves again when she should sit idiling. I took some pictures of the unit but I am having an issue transfering them to my computer. Like I mentioned earlier it has the Horn, Bell, Engine, and break squealing sounds. The unit does not go into reverse and there is no freight yard effects. Can it be because this was a salesman sample unit?
If you know someone with a Z4000 take it there and use the programing feature of the Z4K.
OK GGG. I figured out what I was doing wrong. I read the wrong sequence pattern to reset the locomotive. I had to hit the whistle button then hit the bell button 3 times. When i shut off the power and restarted the engine she cranked up and the FYS started playing in the background while idiling. Thank you so much for your help and all the other members for there input!
